    Hello @nikkilapan!

I spoke to my friend na may 2-BR apartment. When ka ulit dadating? I'll PM you re: details.

Malapit na June. Welcome to Aussie! :)

Hello everyone! I'm new to this forum and I'm so glad to have found this site. My student visa has just been granted and I was wondering if I can I bring my laptop to Australia? Are there conditions of bringing a laptop to Australia? Also I have heard stories that customs/immigration will search/inspect your laptop hard drive, is that true?

Winter na dito sa Australia. Iba-iba pa rin ang range ng temperature dito, depende kung saang state or city ka nakatira. It is good to bring at least a jacket, fleece/wool/leather material. They're not as "fashionable" looking, but they're practical at pwedeng pang-doble.

I have a few reminders on winter essentials here, maybe you can just check it out. Hope it helps.

Tsaka if yout hink your winter clothes are warm enough - think again. In my observation, heto yung categories ng mga necessities base sa affordability:

    Mura:
    - food (Aldi's or Woolies)
    - small appliances (sa K-Mart at least)
    - household and kitchen materials
    - meds and vitamins (Chemist Warehouse)

    Mahal:
    - damit
    - electronics
    - furniture
    - bottled drinks sa labas (seriously? $3.5+ sa small Coke? $3 bottled water?)
    - DAMIT!

Sure. But so is everything else unfortunately. Toothpaste, toothbrush, wet ones, powder, the list goes on po. But these are probably the cheaper ones, kung P50-100 difference lang sa Pinas. In contrast, may P150 dress satin, wala ni $5 dress dito. Without a doubt, basic essentials dito are expensive like food, damit, grocery.

Having said that though, I have learned to hunt for bargains
    - $3 sweater sa esprit and witchery, keri na
    - points with Terry white chemists, kaya yata ako nakakuha mura lip balms at 50c socks for winter from them
May $10-15 fleece blankets pag naka sale

Pero winter jacket, magdala kahit isa lang. Plus electronic adaptors.

Mate, you can't blame these people (even myself am guilty of this) as they are still relatively new to Australia unlike your 6yrs of stay here...

Pero yes, you do have a point in your post above!

and also the best way to get cheap stuffs locally is if you shop around .. kami kasi ni wifey ginagala namin ang buong suburb to find where the cheap stuffs are

Mas mura lipbalm sa atin, halos Php40 lang ata ang chapstick if I remember correctly. Winter is really dry. Aside from lipbalm, you have to use moisturiser on your skin every time you go out.

Ako I dont use lip-balm ... better the natural way of moisturizing your lips (laway) .. eventually your body will adjust to ozzy weather ... its just me but I think lip-balm just makes you lips dependent on it so the more you use it the more your lips want it

Pero winter jacket, magdala kahit isa lang. Plus electronic adaptors.
Basta may sale, lalo ngayong EOFYS, I think hanggang July 10, marami pa ring stores ang naka-sale.

May mga murang pantalon na binebenta on sale for $10-$15. I don't know the quality, so you have to see for yourself.

medyo nawawala na ata sa topic which is check list : "WHAT TO BRING to AUSTRALIA....lalo na sa mga naka student visa" :)

BTW: habang nasa Pilipinas pa bili na ng mga above items para you can save kahit kaunti especially for the students who'll be coming na maghahanap pa lang ng work. " Ika nga "A penny saved is a penny earned." :)

If I were you i will stop converting PH vs AUD (mentally)... you cant expect prices to be low as PH prices ...

You are already on AU not PH
True that. But I think this kind of mindset can be helpful at times. For groceries/toiletries/daily essentials, I think it doesn't make sense to compare with Pinas kasi you'll have to buy it anyway. For damit however, it's good to remember that there is a cheaper option. Para siyang nagiging "mental guide" para sakin, if you get my drift.

Those staying here for years don't anymore mind paying $60 for a haircut, for example. While I still cannot! But I get your point here po.

@xhaiza, on the contrary, I think it's helpful. It's good to have all these inputs from those who have stayed here for awhile. Think of it this way: kung alam nila kung ano mura dito, san pwede bumili ng bargain, ano ways maka mura, ano yung useful, then may idea sila kung ano dapat nila dalhin at ano pwede bilhin dito na. :)

Sobrang lamig dito sis, mag cracked lips and skin. Lalo tropical people pa tayong mga pinoy at bagong salta pa.

Walang size 2 or 4 dito, pinakamaliit size 6. So yung mga "petites", dala kayo pants. Necessary ang pants during the winter.

On the topic pala of moisturizers, makiki-OT lang: For the ladies especially. Bili kayo ng PARABEN-FREE lotions and shampoos etc. 1 in 6 (or 10) Filipino women are developing breast cancer and paraben has strong correlation.

Ok back to regular programming.... :)

When i went to nz from pinas.. I felt things were expensive but after nz going to au. I felt things in au are cheaper compared to nz!

Mahirap if new migrant but after awhile pag uwi mu sa pinas other than essentials like shampoos, toothpaste etc. may feeling ka na mas cheaper sa au kaysa pinas.

D ko ma explain pero in au.. I find a 20-40 dollar shirt from gap, zara, dotti or just jeans bakit parang acceptable na..bakit parang bargain na yun. But when i go home then sa bench/ pneshoppe/ loalde 600-1200pesos tshirt bakit ang mahal ng feeling??? Pere if convert more or less magkalapit lng?

    Anyway..back to the topic.
If student visa lang.. How long are you staying?? What is the weather in your area?
Bring the essentials ..but not too much baka ma excess baggage din. Bring clothes for the weather you will be arriving in..why? Kasi yung ibang clothes, you can buy them when u have a job na. May mga give or take 2-3 months you can wear thicker clothes for winter to start of spring and hopefully by then you have work na.

Summer clothes are cheaper than winter clothes.

Also may option kaya magpa box galing pinas... 2-3 months ( so the next season items na yun) pa yun aabot but good idea if staying longer kasi no weight limit you can put shoes, more essentials even blanket!

For students..dont forget to bring extra money. Make sure you have a good insurance.

For couples on student visa... Buy condoms or mag pills kayo. Dont get pregnant in australia on a student visa. Your kids will not be australian citizens and read the fine prints sa insurance nyo. Di lahat covered ng insurance.

I think yung last important yun...

you don't need an insurance.. unless you want just a "travel insurance", habang nagtatravel kayo..

pero if you are asking about AU private insurance, dun kana po bibili ng private insurance if you want (kung may work na kayo at kung may budget na)

    check this thread: http://www.pinoyau.info/discussion/794/private-health-insurance-in-australia/p1
