Headhunter Experience here in Australia...

Just want to know what were your experiences in dealing with headhunters while looking for a job here in Australia - I have heard from people that they supposedly help you in matching your skills set versus the requirements of their clients however our experience is totally opposite to it...

My wife is starting to get pissed with these headhunters as either (1) they don't respond to your query or (2) they will not let you know if you qualified even after you had submitted some role specific requirements...

I got my job direct sa company mismo; previously I had no luck as well with headhunters.

I had a couple of experiences with headhunters when I was looking for a job. I think what happens is that yeah they look at your skills on your CV and if it matches what their clients are looking for they give you a call for an initial interview. If they're satisfied with the initial interview they pass over your CV to their clients along with other CV's they have. Then their clients shortlists this and get back to them with a list they want to move forward with.

I do agree that they're not really prompt on responding to queries and all that and sometimes they don't even inform you of what's going on. It does get disappointing but the only thing you can do would be to just give them a call if they don't respond to emails.

im still not in AU, but few weeks back i started applying for jobs..
in those few weeks, i think i applied to more than 50 jobs..
some would reply, some were auto-replies, for others no reply at all..
most of their auto-replies would say they will reply with the status/outcome of the application, but some would say that if there is no reply after a certain time (2-3weeks from closing of job post), then consider that unsuccessful...

i have not had any direct interaction with any of them, until last night..
few minutes after i sent my application, the recruiter replied asking for some details..
    - how soon can i join (they need the job to be filled in 2weeks)
    - would i consider the offer even if it's a 12-month contract job (i didnt know its contractual)
    - details about the role and my current role...

after few emails, i said I cannot come within 2 weeks, I need atleast 1-2months to settle everything from resignation to selling my things... I said i will fly to AU by Jul 30 (estimate date)..

her last email, was about her, saying she was like me before, a new migrant trying to make it in AU.. she then said to call her once I arrived (after Jul 30)..

then few minutes after, she found me in LinkedIn and added me in her contacts.

    ;)

Iba iba experiences ko with headhunters. I appreciate those that provide a generic reply na unsuccessful ung application para I know straight away.

For those I'm able to get in touch with and may progress ung applications until interviews, they are very nice and gave me tips with regards to the interviews. Very polite, professional and friendly. One of them even edited my resume. hehe Yung isa naman, naka-4 na tawag sa akin within the day to check some information about my experiences. Yung isa, binigyan pa ako ng background about what type of industries ang meron sa Perth, Melby and Sydney. hehehehe

I think it really depends, if alam nila na pasok ung skills mo sa role/job opportunity, makulet sila sayo. Pag medyo tagilid, hindi ka na nila papansinin. hehehe Although not all of them are like that, may mga headhunters akong nakakausap na sasabihan ka agad if unsuccessful and ieencourage ka pa na meron pang ibang future opportunities. May commission ata sila from the company pag na-fill nila ung job posting. hehehe

Yup headhunters are competing with each other. Companies normally deal with several headhunters simultaneusly plus iba pa kung minsan yung internal referrals at applicants. They are being paid by the Company usually 1-2 months ng salary mo or other agreed arrangements pag succesful ka naipasok.

May mga headhunters din na mangongolekta lang muna ng resumes at interviewhin ka for future purposes and opportunities.

Just finished my skype interview 2 hours ago. I am offshore btw.
She said that they will revise my CV according to the requirements by the client.
They are nice and friendly, commented on me that I speak fast... but said it's a good point because if someone speaks fast then he thinks fast as well..

i guess it is always better with recruiter's assistance since this is how they make a living.. they will fight and market your CV the best they can if they think you have a chance..

i have to wait now since they will forward my CV to the client, then the fight really begins

Head hunters, recruitment managers here are brilliant and very helpful in my personal experience. I applied from NZ and in less than a week time I got job interviews with Skype with potential employers. After 2 weeks I got the position I wanted. Also, they manage to arrange relocation fees (airfare, two months rent for apartment, car rental for two weeks) for me and my family. If I'm not successful with the position I always asked the recruitment manager what went wrong during my interview all of them were giving me advises how to improve my next interviews and few of them suggested changes in my CV. All of them are contacting me if a position comes up even now but I'm telling them I'm not on the market, maybe six months para makuha ng recruitment manager na nagpasok sa kin yung commissioned nya. That's why I don't believe and find it bs when they tell they need "local experience" that's the subtle way of saying your not qualified for the position. I used head hunters to my advantage who ever gives me the good offer and more flexibility with work dun ako. Kaya nagpapataasan sila ng offer syo kasi gusto nila makakuha ng mataas na commission tapos ikaw gusto mo mataas ang sahod mo. For IT people I can recommend the headhunters for Brissy, Melby, Perth.

@pinoykiwi_inOZ when you applied in Oz, did you already have local experience in NZ?

I just thought that maybe your work experiences in NZ were considered to be equivalent to "Local Experience" in Oz and became an advantage in a way...

I ask a pinay who works as head hunter and a close friend of mine then I asked an Australian head hunter that give me my current work. This is what they said "Local experience" is recruitment manager's excuse for lots of stuff. Like your CV didn't matches the potential employers JD, you're over/under qualified, we can't find the potential JD keywords in your CV, you are not cultural fit in the company and she said the worst is we just don't want to hire you.

@pinoykiwi_inOZ if one gets a response pala of not having "local experience"... might as well not wallow on it and take it litterally coz it could be due to myriad of reasons lang..

just be better than your last application and move on to the next job prospect...

I also experienced some BS stuff...mag-start na dapat ako work on the first week of arrival here thru a manpower agency...everything is good na then apparently, sabi ni agent e hinde na daw itutuloy nung company ang pag-hire ng manpower sa kanila...

then, supposedly to work at a big time supermarket, in one of their warehouse near the airport...oks naman ung interview at pinapili lang ng schedule roster...then schedule na rin ng medical...ang daming pinagawa dun sa medical, since the role is somewhat involves lifting and standing for a long time...oks naman, nagawa ko naman ang lahat; including lifting weights (20kg), push-ups, some exercises, etc...then i just waited for the HR to call kung kelan mag-start, pero hinde na tumawag...so ako na yung tumawag to follow-up...apparently, sabi nung HR na hinde na daw nila ako tatangapin kase daw e mataas daw ung BMI (Body Mass Index)...so i argued, sabi ko na nagawa ko naman lahat nung pinagawa dun sa medical...but still, ayaw pa rin nila ako tanggapin...so uminit ang ulo ko at sabi ko sa HR kuno nila na "you should have put it in your ad! (re: BMI)"

***sabi ko na lang sa sarili ko..."Its their lost not mine!" at syempre, sana malugi sila! bwahahaha :-)

In my experience on headhunters, I am so lucky kse mabait at masipag maghanap ng work para skin yung headhunter ko. I got my first job related to my skills thru this head hunter and it was a 6 months contract but she never stop looking for a permanent job for me. and the thing is hinahanapan nya tlga ako ng work na swak tlga sa previous work experience ko and same industry. Just before I finished my 6 months contract job she found another one again and suppose to be it was an on going contract then after 4 months I got permanent which the company where I am working now paid that recruitment company around $10k for me to get permanent and not anymore with that recruitment company.

@IslanderndCity Tinawagan ako ng hays then they invite me for an interview not sure if may inapplyan ako sa open jobs nila sa seek au that time or sa linked in nila nakita profile ko. I went to their office for an interview naging honest nman yung naginterview skin na wala pa silang opening that time pero once na meron at swak sa experience they will call me and promise nya skin na hahanapan nya ko ng work mapa casual contract or permanent man basta may work. Tinanong din nya ko kung mas anong type ng work gusto ko from my work expereinces para dun daw sya magfocus maghanap at itry daw nya makahanap ng similar companies/industries na pinasukan ko. Which is definitely nagawa nya in both jobs they gave me :) lahat ng inapplyan ko sa seek au walang tumawag skin, sa email nagreply puro rejection letters...Hays lang tlga tumawag skin. Swerte din tlga kse sabi ng headhunter ko bihira daw tlga sila nagiinterview ng walang local experience, pero nung nakita nya daw CV ko she decided to invite me for an interview kse very competitive daw work experiences and puro multi-national companies pinanggalingan ko.
