Newstart Allowance is income tested; kung eligible lang sana when you arrive in Australia, this would be a very good help sana.

HOWEVER, fast forward after being here for 2 years... I doubt if you will really want to receive Newstart Allowance as this would only mean na wala ka work or super low yung pay mo. :)

    Hi Old Timers -

I'm wondering if you can help me out. I've been in Sydney since March 22 2014. 2 days ago, I received a letter from the Australian Electoral Commission inquiring about my permanent address for voting purposes.

I don't recall registering with the Australian Electoral Commission. Unless this is something that's automatic when you register with Medicare and/or Centrelink?

In any case, I was told to either update my permanent address online or send back the letter indicating that I am not an Australian Citizen.

Sounds like an easy solution right? So I ticked the box indicating that I am not an Australian Citizen and sealed it in the envelope included in the letter sent to me ( I love how the AU Government is so helpful in such a small gesture).

I was hoping to send it back today, but I suddenly had doubts if I should.

    This is why:

Last July, I called up the Australian Taxation Office to inquire about lodging my taxes. And I was told, after waiting on the phone for 45 minutes (not the good AU Gov part), that as of July, I am not yet a Permanent Resident for Tax Purposes (even though I have a PR Visa 189). They told me I had to wait until the end of September to lodge my taxes.

This where my doubts about the letter from the AEC stemmed from. Is there such a thing as an Australian Citizen for Voting purposes too? Or was I supposed to take that technically (not an Actual AU Citizen) as opposed to literally (AU Citizen because I live here)?

Any of the old timers here who have gotten a similar letter from AEC early on into their residency?

I just want to make sure I understand the parameters correctly as any misstep might jeopardize my status within Australia.

Or pwede ring, praning lang ako and I just should have dropped the letter in the P.O. Box this morning on my way to work. hehehe.

@mhej - i received the same letter and did not worry at all.. I returned the mail with the "i am not an Au citizen" reply..

ATO is correct, you are not yet an Au resident FOR TAX purposes.. So i suggest you use an agent on how to file your tax the first time..

Hi, not too sure about the 2-year waiting period. But Family Tax Benefit, Child Care Assitance, Rent Assistance are readily available upon arrival. These are family claims. For singles, wala pa akong naririnig na claims where a 2-year waiting time is required. :)
I have a question. I will be bringing my 2 YO daughter who is an Australian Citizen (by descent) but never set foot to OZ. Hindi siya ma e-entitle sa Centrelink and other benefits? Hindi ako PR visa, but Australian Citizen sya.

She was also born in 2012, at the time when 5k AUD pa ang baby bonus. Makakakuha parin ba ako nito for her?

I am married to a Filipino but my daughter's dad is Australian. Kaya ganyan. Whirlwind romance kase. Hehehe. Salamat sa lahat ng sasagot :)

simple, just like renting out a car albeit on a longer time period...

but why would you be interested in this? last time I check, the cost of renting a fridge is like paying for the item to be fully depreciated in 1.5 yrs... :)

Baby bonus is over already I believe...

Kuha ka nalang ng sustento sa tatay; bigger over a course of a few years... :)

I have read na nagbibigay padin sila ng baby bonus for those who were born prior to the new policies.

How about yung other benefits sa Centrelink and Medicare? Magiging entitled kaya sya? Thank you!

Question: The job i'm supposed to have hasn't found me yet. :D i thought, need ko lang i-file sa ATO is non-lodgment advice. Pero the other day, centrelink called and asked for the salary, redundancy payment i received since july 2013. Does it mean, na yung centrelink benefits namin ay maapektuhan dahil sa salary that i used to get? Coz that's what the girl at the other line was implying. Anyway, i still need to get back to them next week.

Nag apply ako newstart allowance at tinwagan ako before na subject daw sa residency period un na 2 years same with concession. Ung family tax benefit wala pa dn result samin, 35 working days processing.
So, dapat ubos muna ang savings mo?
