Job Searching tips

RenRen Adelaide, SAPosts: 218Member
edited October 2012 in Working in Australia
Hi everyone,

First, I’m not an expert in job searching; this is based on experience and seminars that I have attended. I-share ko lang.

Approaches to a Job Search:

1. Advertisements (20-40% of jobs)
http://www.seek.com.au
http://www.careerone.com.au
http://www.indeed.com.au/jobs?q=&l=Adelaide+SA
The Advertiser newspaper

2. Word of Mouth / Networking
Meet friends, new friends and friend of friends.
Personal contact is the main starting point for active job search (56%)

3. Directly contacting a company
Define your targets and do in-dept research:
Industry, location, size, culture, reputation, Contact Person

4. Social Media
Linkedin http://au.linkedin.com/home?trk=hb_logo

5. Recruitment Agencies
Least recommended since Recruiters are paid a fee by companies to find them suitable employees.
Recruiter’s clients are employers, not you.
Be aware of potential conflict of interest.
KNOW which recruitment companies operate in your area of interest.

Hope this helps

Use less filters when searching at www.seek.com.au (or whichever search engine). Do not type any keyword; just choose your industry then your location. (refer to jpg below)

Most jobs are not advertised, so word of the mouth is your best chance of getting in. Sometimes you don’t even need to have an interview ;)
So the more people you know the better chance of you finding a job.

I was in a (Pinoy) party when a friend of a friend informed me about a vacancy in their company; it was advertised though, for some reason hinde ko nakita sa seek. And as soon as I went home, quickly login on the company website, fortunately only 5 hrs left for the job to close. Yup I got that Job! ;)

    Directly contacting a company

Someone I know did this. Search all the companies related to his industry then send them an email introducing himself , skills, qualification and what he can do to the company. So in less than a month he got a job. That happened 2008 recession period.

@Ren, thanks for posting these tips. It will be useful for new migrants who are actively seeking for employment. Normally, i'll check job openings through seek.com.au but since I am still outside Australia, it seems that the chances of being selected is lower. What's your opinion on this?

I have linkedin account but I don't normally login to check, add or invite people, but since you mentioned that it'll be helpful, i'll start to build my network through this account.

I've been getting some emails/calls from head hunters because of my linkedin account asking if I am looking for a job. Maganda ring magkaroon ng account dito sa social media na ito. You can join some groups here and indicate that you are actively looking for a job.

Hi there! hmm opinion varies per personal experiences. I would say most employer prefer someone who can start on 2 weeks notice that has a local adress and mobile #.

But you can still prepare, start working on your CV and cover letter. Prepare different templates for different type of jobs. Take note I believe that quality is more important than quantity in sending out CVs ;)

Theres a lot of preparation u need while u are still there..

Hi Ren, thanks for these tips...ok to sa mga bagong dating ng Australia hehe...

May mga bad experiences po ba ako maisshare regarding headhunters? Parang useful din kasi sila in a sense that you establish a connection with a potential employer through agencies...

    @LokiJr

Hi Loki, I never tried using agency since hinde sya recommended nung Speaker sa training session namin. But then again like I said I'm not an expert on this :)
May nakwento kasi sya, na some companies pag nakita nila na thru agent that would mean that if they hire u they will have to pay that agent.
But of course its your choice :)

Sa mga naririnig ko kahit may visa na, mas prefer pa rin ng mga employers na nasa Australia na kayo...so I think the alternative is to make your presence felt with headhunters...they won't pass up a candidate because they get a fee for every successful hire anyway hehe

How about kung mag lagay ka ng Australia address plus number and also indicate your mobile number dito sa pinas? May nakapag try ba nung ganung approach? Naconsider ba kayo for the job?
