Regional Uni OR Top Uni?

Hello, getting po getting Student Visa then applying for PR. Since master of IT po ang kunin ko, dream school ko po ang QUT in Brisbane (included in top 200 schools globally)

But ECU po in Perth is regional and gives 3yrs of Post-study work visa instead of 2years from QUT. Also may extra 5 points if lived / studies in regional area.

Is it worth it to go to ECU instead of QUT especially if same price lang?

Is the program in ECU exactly the same as the one in QUT? If the cost of the tuition is the same, you'll have to do a bit more research regarding the environment/location of the uni, as the cost of living would be a bit different too, as well as the potential job opportunities (after you graduate). Imo, while the uni's global ranking may seem a good basis for choosing where to study, take note this ranking is about overall ranking, not specific to any one faculty/department/degree. Do a deep dive into the IT-related industry partners or linkages of each uni, as those partners could help enhance your uni experience (you might meet someone from those companies through on-campus events/seminars).

There are plenty of other factors to consider too, such as whether the state you go to will be able to sponsor you for PR or not (if IT is in their skill shortage list), or if you plan to apply for 189 visa (so more base points like regional education will matter a lot), or if you have relatives in either state. If the Master of IT curriculum in either university is not exactly the same, you'll have to choose which one will give you a better edge/flexibility in terms of job hunting in the near future.

If the cost of living (especially rent, as this is the highest expense you will pay) and the demand for IT jobs are about the same, and you're considering migrating, ECU might be a better option for you since you can gain more points by living in the regional area. If you are willing to sacrifice the regional points to go to your dream uni, then by all means choose QUT.

Hello po. I strongly agree po sa lahat ng points na ni-lay out ni @athelene. It all depends on your circumstance and preference. Marami talagang mga factors na kailangan mong iconsider. Like for example, let's say 31 years old ka today (max points for age which is 30) then after completing your Masters Degree here, 33 ka na. Hindi mo na makukuha ung maximum points for age (bale 25 points nalang makukuha mo). Though pede mo naman syang bawiin sa other parts like English Test, Professional Year, NAATI, etc.

In addition, may mga factors din beyond your control like for example changes sa migration rules or pointing system, changes sa skill list, pandemic, etc. Kailangan mo din sila iconsider kasi you never know after mo grumaduate, tumaas na nman ung points requirement for PR (hindi naman na sana).

If I was in your situation, since PR naman ang goal nating lahat, importante ang points (in my opinion lang ha it's still up to you). Therefore, I would study in a regional area for the additional straight away 5 points. So I suggest to start by assessing your current points as of today and assume ung points mo after studying. Then you can move on to read about the things na ni-mention ni @athelene. Try mo din alamin ung mga skills na may shortage para alam mo kung anong specialisation ng IT ka papasok.

And one more thing, share ko lang experience ko baka sakaling makatulong. Naalala ko ganyan din ako noon, ni-search ko top universities dito sa Melbourne. Nag enroll ako sa uni na according to them nasa Top 2% sila world-wide. But after finishing my degree I realised na the name of the university doesn't matter that much. Ang importante lang is may degree ka that will help you get a positive skills assessment result from your assessing body (ACS I assume kasi IT) and ung institution/university eh registered with CRICOS. Eto kasi isa sa mga requirements before applying for PR.

hi po. may tanong lang po ako pwede ba ako mag apply ng onshore skilled migration while under student visa? i have positive assessment na rin equivalent to aus bachelors degree with 10 yrs experience. 80 points lang tlga ako pag 190 kaya medyo matagal tagal kung SMP route so while waiting mag student visa muna cguro ako 2 yrs na masters degree full time or 4 yrs part time.. what do u think po? possible kaya?

International students (meaning you don't have AU citizenship or PR) cannot study part-time on a student visa. If you are doing the student visa route, I think pwede naman dito ka na maghintay ng invitation, pero yun nga lang additional expense kasi mahal ang tuition and living costs. If you are after additional points from Australian studies, you can only declare the additional points in your SkillSelect profile after you've completed your program.

Again, tama po si @athelene. Kung mag student visa ka po, you have to finish your masters degree in a certain period of time as a full time international student. Though hindi ako sure if pedeng mag apply for student visa while waiting for your PR application result.

Aside from applying for 190, nag try din po ba kayo ng 491? Also, checking your signature, my other ways ka pa po to increase your points from 80 to 95 (in case you're not aware of it yet). You can aim for superior sa PTE that will give you additional 10 points and also take the NAATI test online which gives you another 5 additional points. Now your chances of getting an invite will significantly increase with 95 points. But of course, it is still up to you to decide depending on your preferences and circumstance. Sana po nakatulong. 🙂

Yes im considering po 189, 190 and 491 haha plan A is to maximize the points of my English take ulti ako ng PTE para 85 points for 189 and yung NAATI naman parang hindi ko pa na explore yun di ko pa alam kung makakuha ako kc nasa Dubai ako.. plan B is student visa pero yun nga lang costly sya..

Ang NAATI test po ngayon is online na due to the pandemic. Kaya regardless of location po eh pede kayo mag take ng NAATI. 🙂
