Take note that the Graduate Diploma is different from a Diploma or Advanced Diploma, which are actually lower than a bachelor degree. If you are looking to upskill within the architecture field, I would recommend Master of Architecture or the GradDip/GradCert programs, unless you are looking to change industry/field. You can probably get away with doing a diploma or advanced diploma, pero kailangan talaga ma-justify mo yung "downgrade" to a lower AQF level sa GTE mo. Usually kasi hinahanap ng immigration officer yung progression of study (meaning yung aaralin mo is higher dun sa previous qualification mo).

If you're considering to study in Melb, have a look at University of Melbourne and RMIT, as they have may have more scholarship opportunities. Pwede rin sa Deakin in Geelong if you want to get points for studying in regional area, but I'm not sure if they have scholarships specifically in architecture (for sure meron si UniMelb).

As an agent myself, it all depends on your circumstance. If single lesser risk vs having dependents.

Note that student visa is the most expensive pathway to migrate via skilled pathway and it’s not a guaranteed outcome.

Hi everyone! Hope someone can help me out.

I'm a licensed architect in the ph, with 4 yrs exp and I am currently thinking of migrating to Australia (long term goal is PR) through student pathway. I know I have other better cheaper options, but all of them seem such long waits, I would like to come to oz asap for personal reasons. I also need to be located in Sydney since I already have a place to live there.

So basically I want to work as a ce draftsperson after my studies. I think this somehow gives better pr chances than architectural draftsperson, and I've always had quite an interest in engineering. So Im planning to take Diploma of Civil Construction Design in tafe nsw.

My problem is, it's duration is only 75 weeks in CRICOS. I know that I need 92 weeks Australian Studies to have a positive assessment when I apply for 485 (which i believe is my next step).

Questions:

How should I fill in the remaining weeks I need? Do I need to start with Certificate IV first? My budget is limited so I can't afford getting a bachelors degree.
Are there other course options (ie diploma of building and construction? diploma of building design?) that can lead to ce draftsperson employment? If there are cheaper options preferrably in sydney, id appreciate all suggestions.

Other Notes:

I know some architects from the ph have directly applied as ce draftsperson as their nominated occupation. But I don't have enough experience with it; I have more architectural exp, hence this student visa pathway. I really do want to study for upskill purposes also
I don't have a migration agent (only educ) so I'm trying to learn all of these on my own. So if this seems like a bad risky plan, I'd appreciate all opinions as well. 🙂 Thanks po!

Most people find their jobs via networks, so ideally you learn to start networking/meeting people through events, job fairs, etc. Update your LinkedIn profile, as some recruiters specialising in architecture are also on LinkedIn.

However, for new migrants, I would recommend starting in small firms to build up your work experience in Australia. Lagi kang hahanapan ng "local experience" as most large companies do not have the time and resources (people) to train newly-arrived migrants, whereas small practices may be more willing to train people.

Also, make your CV more targeted/tailored. Don't send a generic CV to all the companies. The tailoring of your CV shows your effort and dedication to really getting to know the company.

Best visa to have is PR (190/491 because architectural draftsperson is only on the STSOL), but you will have to go through the skills assessment and migration pathway. It's also possible to get a temporary work visa, but I don't know how easy/difficult it will be to get one for that occupation during this time (pandemic).

Pwede po kaya na instead of BS arki or masteral ang kunin ko sa Australia mag tafe na lng ako related sa interior design since related naman yung dalawa. Para po mas mura sana. Tho di sya pathway to PR yung tafe course na yun, baka pwede ang sunod step ko is 190 visa at least may madagdag lng na points na nag aral ako dun. 😅 any insight po?

Mas mura ang TAFE definitely, but ID ba ang gusto mong pasukan na work down the line? Archi draftsperson pa rin ba ang ino-nominate mo after graduating from TAFE or ID na? Both occupations are STSOL lang so you'll have to weigh your options kung alin ang mas makakatulong para maka-migrate. Like will you get more points under archi draftsperson because you have overseas work experience? If ID ang ino-nominate mo, baka wala kang ma-claim na overseas experience because your experience was not post-graduation. Yes, you will get points for Australian study, but nominating ID for migration could lose you the work experience points. If you choose to still nominate archi draftsperson, the ID diploma will only contribute to Australian study points, but probably not much for employability after grad. Nagpaskills assessment ka na ba kay VETASSESS for archi draftsperson?

The eligibility requirements for 190 visa are quite tight nowadays. States are opting to choose people who are already onshore, have physical residency, have at least 6 months work experience in the nominated occupation, have ongoing job offer for at least a year, etc. While studying in a state can get you eligibility for 190, it's your employability after graduation that matters more nowadays.

FYI, If nominating interior design, it won’t work with skills assessment as it requires post qualification experience.

Hi, QUT used to have a 1-year MArch, but they've changed it to 2 years. Most MArch programs in Australia are 2 years, and they have to be accredited by the AACA if you want to get a positive skills assessment as an architect. You can check the list of accredited programs on AACA website:

Where you go to do your MArch depends on your interest, as universities are known for different things (yes, even though the MArch curriculum is pretty similar across Australian universities). USYD, UNSW, University of Melbourne, RMIT, and UTS are well-known for their architecture programs. You can have a look at the online handbook/curriculum of each uni to see which program you like best.

I've done two design studios at USYD, and my experience was pretty good (if not stressful, hehehe). I did a Digital Architecture and Sustainable Architecture studios, which meant we had to use digital tools (Rhino + visual scripting) or focus on designing sustainable buildings. Design studio in Australia is completely different from the Philippines, because you only work on one project per semester, and double ang credit weight ng studio as compared to other subjects.

I have a friend studying at University of Canberra, and sa kanila parang small cohort lang sila, and ang focus ng studio nila is more on heritage conservation or community. My friend is pretty happy with studying at UC though, kasi less stressful daw than other uni (wherein you have to really compete---pabonggahan ng design, ganun).
