Engineers Australia Nominates for Global Talent Visa

The Global Talent Visa Program, administered by the Australian Department of Home Affairs under the Distinguished Talent visa, (also known as the Global Talent Independent (GTI) Program), is a streamlined visa pathway for highly skilled professionals to work and live permanently in Australia.

The GTI Program seeks to attract the brightest and best global talent to work in future focused sectors to help grow Australia’s innovation and tech economies.

The GTI program requires applicants to be nominated by a nominator, which includes an Australian organisation with a national reputation in the same field as the nominee.

Engineers Australia is the peak body of engineering and exists to advance the science and practice of engineering for the benefit of the community. Engineers Australia’s is recognised globally as a leading engineering organisation through its international mobility agreements which enable
Engineers Australia members to live and work around the world in more than 120 countries. Engineers Australia is now an organisation nominating highly skilled engineering professionals under GTI program.

Priority target sectors

A list of priority sectors has been identified by the Department of Home Affairs. Engineers Australia may consider nominating candidates who have proved to be highly skilled engineering professionals in the following target sectors:

Resources: examples of engineering occupations under this target sector include mining, petroleum, chemical, and plant engineers

Agri-food and AgTech: examples of engineering occupations under this target sector include agricultural, and materials engineers

Energy: examples of engineering occupations under this target sector include electrical, and geotechnical engineers

Health industries: an example of an engineering occupation under this target sector
includes biomedical engineer and its specialisations

Defence, advanced manufacturing and space: examples of engineering occupation under this target sector includes aeronautical engineer and its specialisations, naval architect, electronics, transport, production, and mechanical engineers

Circular economy: an examples of an engineering occupation under this target sector is industrial engineer

DigiTech: examples of engineering occupations under this target sector include, telecommunications, and telecommunications network engineers

Infrastructure and tourism: examples of engineering occupations under this target sector includes civil, and structural engineers

Financial Services and FinTech: examples of engineering occupations under this target sector include electronics, and telecommunications network engineers

Education: examples of engineering occupations under this target sector include electronics, biomedical, telecommunications network, and agricultural engineers

Note: The engineering occupations listed under each target sector only serve as a guidance only. It does necessarily mean that only those occupations are applicable or that they are limited to that sector. You may wish to nominate one or more sectors that are most applicable to your engineering profession.

GTI eligibility

To be eligible to apply for the Global Talent Visa Program under the Distinguished Talent visa, individuals must:

  • Prove they are internationally recognised with evidence of outstanding achievements.
  • Still be prominent in their field of expertise.
  • Provide evidence that they would be an asset to Australia, in their area of expertise.
  • Have no difficulty obtaining employment in Australia or becoming established in their field.
  • Have a recognised organisation or individual in Australia endorse them as global talent, in the same field as the applicant.

Candidates must meet a high standard and show an exceptional track record of professional achievement. This may include senior roles, patents, professional awards, and international publications and memberships.

Places are also available to PhD graduates, and certain PhD students, who can demonstrate their exceptional talent and international recognition.

Candidates should have the ability to attract a salary at or above the high-income threshold of AU$158,500 per annum.

Nomination assessment process

The GTI nomination assessment is a three-step process:

  • Step 1: Self-assess for eligibility
  • Step 2: Submission of application
  • Step 3: Assessment and nomination

Places on the GTI Program are also available to PhD graduates and certain PhD students who are nearing completion (up to six months away from conferral) and can demonstrate their exceptional talent and international recognition in a target sector. For example, technological breakthroughs or advancement in research that will have significant industrial impact.

If you are currently enrolled in a formal educational program, you will need to include your enrolment letter, current transcripts and thesis submitted for peer review to external examiners as part of your application.

Achievement statement and supporting evidence

You are required to provide a narrative statement with documentary evidence describing your exceptional and outstanding achievements. Your narrative statement must describe:

  • Your global talent and distinguished expertise in the respective engineering field
  • Your internationally recognised achievements
  • How are you able to contribute towards Australia’s economy

For each of the achievements listed in your statement, you need to provide documentary evidence.
Documentary evidence includes, but is not limited to:

  • Media articles
  • Publications
  • Patents
  • Awards
  • Academic certificate and transcripts
  • Recommendation letters (specifying your achievements)
  • Organisational structure (showing you in a senior role)
  • Project plans
  • Pitch desk presentations, investor’s pitches
  • Start-up performance documentation
  • Keynote presentations
  • Other official documents that justify your achievements

Proof of high-income threshold

If you are currently (or previously) employed, you must provide evidence of income that supports your eligibility in attracting a high-income salary meeting the high-income threshold bracket.

Evidence of high-income salary may include issued payslips or income tax statements. The evidence must indicate the total taxable income. The current high-income threshold is $158,500

ACS charges $891 for the GTI nomination application and is non-refundable.
