i'm a nurse in nsw.. before coming to australia you need to be eligible to work in australia. hospitals are more than willing to sponsor for a visa ONLY IF you have a valid aphra nursing license ANY state in australia is valid. without a current/ valid (license is renewed yearly) then they will not sponsor you anyway and most will not even give you an interview.

all nurses except ireland, uk and new zealand are required to take the ielts and pass a bridging program. bridging schools area actual proper universities and they will assess your years of experience regardless where you graduated in the philippines to see how long you need for the bridging course.. based on friends, those with 3 years or more only had a couple of months of bridging which can cost upto 15000 aud whereas those with less than 3 years varied from 1 year plus months which can cost upto 30thou aud.

visa sponsorship is the easy part. all jobs are listed online just google them or google list of hospitals but remember if no CURRENT VALID AUSTRALIAN license.. you will not even be shortlisted for an interview.

My girlfriend is a registered nurse in the Philippines, working for almost a year in St Luke's. She will be my secondary applicant for Visa 476.

    Questions:

    1. What are the options for her(i.e. nursing homes, clinics, hospitals)?

    2. Any suggestions on where to take the bridging program in Melbourne or Perth?

    Thanks. =)

the easiest way is the bridging program.. the bridging program depending on school will really want you to be
    1. a registered nurse (requirement po ang PRC and other school documents)
    2. experience.. kasi if no experience as a nurse then are you willing to spend 30 thou aud for a 1 year bridging program? ....nursing assistant/ caregiver is not nursing experience.
remember it is not only the school that will assess your documents.. also aphra which is the professional regulatory board in australia.. so after passing your bridging program, the school will submit your papers to aphra and aphra will then give you a license.

there is no exam for nurses here..unless you want to take the challenge test for nurses instead of the bridging course but still the same requirements to be able to sit for the exam. it's not a common route for foreign nurses. regardless naman, they will still assess if you are legible to take the exam if hindi naman they will still advise that you take a bridging program.

it doesn't matter where you will take the bridging...any university in australia that offers it is okay. what matters is which one is more affordable and which one is shorter, diba? hehehe! so do ask around, what are their requirements and how much the program is. ask also where the placement will be..kasi what happened with some people i know that took the program in adelaide, the hospital gave them an opportunity to apply for jobs once they finished the program and got their licenses.. so diba okay? may instant offer na after school.

nurses here can work in alot of different places.. pwdi sa children's hospital (like me) , pwdi sa adults.. pwdi sa maternity.. pwdi sa rest home or community/ school nursing.. pwdi sa clinic! kahit saan! pwdi din sa mental health if you guys want..pero won't really advice that for women.. malaki ang australians and though may safety protocols naman but i know of an incident na nurse assaulted by a patient dahil sobrang laki talaga ng patiente.

anyway... anywhere basta may trabaho for nurses. you can apply for that!! di lang tayo pwdi as nurse consultant (hehehe) and/ or nurse practitioner/ nurse specialist.. may additional years of school yan here and unfortunatly they do not recognize any of our master's degree or doctorate degrees na galing sa pinas.

so basically on our license, they will put what division of nursing you are and what are the restrictions for practice.. basically registered nurse tayo here..any staff nursing job pwdi tayo except those i mentioned above but later on when we get work may mga sponsorship for schooling naman or continuing education then if dream nyo maging nurse practitioner then grab those opportunities later on.

i repeat..any job for a registered nurse pwdi tayo. any area!! ..most filipino nurses i know are in the operating theatre and/ or i.c.u.:D then if talagang masipag and marunong mag drive, part time in rest homes:D hehehehe!

so again, experience+ielts+ bridging program= aphra current / valid nursing license.

the only way to become nurses in australia.

may ibang nurses who come here without ielts and take the english or caregiver course here..and end up stuck as caregivers kasi mahirap ung accent ng australians..di mapasa ung ielts dito..mas ok ung ielts sa pinas..easy!

wa'g na mag other courses coming here kasi double gastos lng yan and time consuming without an assurance if you will become a nurse..mas ok ung bridging program kasi may chance pa ma absorb sa work once finish na ung course and may license na.

    good luck!

depende what visa you guys have..nursing assistant/ caregivers is the most common thing people do but kahit ano po pwdi as long as ok with the employer pero visa dependent po yan on how many hours lang allowed kayo to work per week.. and i am not very well versed with the type of visas.

pero sa mga kilala ko, most don't work naman eh kasi pagod na from the program...may placement kasi ung program so not just paperworks but also clinical setting.

if approved, we'll be on visa 476 which has no limitations on work/study for 18 months. One of the biggest hurdle pala yung bridging because of the cost. We'll probably go there and work, tapos ipon for bridging program nya.

    Thanks @li_i_ren ! =)

pano po kpag walng license dito sa pinas? hindi po kasi ako board passer. nursing grad po ako. at my experience sa nursing assistant. makakapag apply ba ako as nursing assistant dyan sa australia? or kailangan mag take pa ako ng short course para pwede ako makapag apply?

nursing assistant is caregiver. wala pong mga sub nursing specialty sa oz gaya sa u.s.a like license practical nurses. so nursing assistant is equivalent to a caregiver lang po. like i said, sa ozzie ung mga caregivers are actually part time nursing students in their 1st or 2nd year or high school grad na di na nag college or drop outs. so meaning po, no degree naman talaga necessary.
pero saying that, if new migrant ka i don't know why but most rest homes would like you to get a caregiving course.. parang maid sa singapore diba they get trained to turn the microwave/laundry and etc.. so ung caregiver courses mga weeks lang yan, they will teach you how to use the hoist/ proper lifting/ proper feeding..i do not know saan may course na ganyan most likely mga community colleges lang po yan.

pero please bare in mind, that eventually you will still not be a registered nurse kasi
    1. you don't have a valid philippine license.. requirement po yan for bridging and for aphra assessment.. a valid current nursing licenses from any country is a must.
    2. experience wise.. if you don't have a registered nurse experience. mahirapan ka mag hanap ng bridging course and mahirapan ka mag hanap ng registered nurse job.

if you are happy naman na nursing assistant lang and no further plans to be a registered nurse in australia, then short courses lang kilangan mo or just look for a workplace na happy to take you without those course kasi nursing graduate ka naman eh if drop out nga pwdi ikaw pa na BSN graduate.

Hi! I find this part very helpful. And thanks for all the info.

So is it safe to say that with the current SkillSelect program, getting there on an immigrant visa as a nurse is difficult considering you must be accredited or furthermore trained with their bridging course?

So one of the best thing to do as a nurse is get through a student visa, depending on the recommended time for bridging course at diyan ka pa lang pwede magtrabaho or makapag apply as a nurse? Tama po ba?

Thank you in advance for the replies!

@theflyingrn tama po.. get a 7 in ielts first kasi requirement po sa schools ( may post po ako of some bridging schools in oz), the school will recomment how long the bridging program is depending on your experience and will also give you a letter/ recommendation for visa purposes, come here and do your bridging, then with diploma from the bridging provider, get aphra registration, and with an aphra registration / nursing license tsaka lang po employers will even entertain you for employment.

careful of agencies in the philippines.. too many scams po specially for nurses.

Wow. Pahirapan pala jan. Pero totoo po ba that the school will help you land a job? I dont understand how it is, is it like the training institution will help you or will absorb you?

    Thanks li_i_ren!

NO the schools will NOT help you find a job.. bridging course will teach you the laws that govern nursing here, will teach you mga protocols and ethics ng nursing in australia. then they will place you in a hospital/ rest home to learn clinical skills.. like hoists/ GC or CC alaris infusion pumps, kangaroo feeding pumps, medications (iba po names and dose range they use compared to the US mims).. etc. equipment learning po and computer training din if you are lucky .. kasi ordering x-rays/ ordering blood test/ ordering equipment/ reporting incidence..etc nasa computer po yan.

it is not the schools who will hire you po.. they don't have that capacity. yung placement mu sa clinical whether rest home/ hospital..if they are impressed with your performance, they will tell you to APPLY.. you still need to apply po..hindi po automatic.. kasi if you really think about it.. nurses from the u.k. really love to apply to oz... and they have 10 years or more experience and no bridging required BUT your edge is if you do a placement in the hospital / rest home.. you can IMPRESS the staff/ manager and if you do good in the interview kahit maliit lang ung experience mu.. the staff knows you already so that is your edge.

pero again.. it is not the school who will find you a job. it is your responsibility pa rin.. the school will only assess your skills, help you find a clinical placement and help you with your aphra registration then after you have graduated with them..you are on your own job hunting.

Wow. Thank you so much for the comprehensive information. I really appreciated it.

At this time, I am working as a flight attendant in a middle east airline company. I used to teach in nursing while in the Philippines for three years. I believe that will not suffice or maybe equate to the solid hospital experience required.

Anyhow, I will check what I can do first thing. I have applied for an agency to work on my behalf for my Canada application but it was put on a halt by the immigration government.

    Thank you again!

Its the same thing. Sa parehong course makakakuha ka ng license. Ang competition will start when you apply for a job na may dala kang bala which is experience over the others na walang bala or experience. Sobrang tough daw mag apply ng work sabi. Yung friend ko tapos na RN na sya pero hirap makahanap ng sponsor kaya ayun nag enroll ulit. I didnt mean to dishearten you ha.

@theflyingrn you might even be my sister's friend..hehehehe..or work for the same company. or you might be my sister? hahahaha! she's an FA too.

you know what i tell her.. enjoy being a FA. pay in middle east as a FA is very good...if you get good flights..you have better pay than i do as an australian nurse. free house/ tax free/ free travel.. someone to buy your groceries for you (i heard you guys have errand boys)...

only downsize i heard are crabby minded people...but any job has those.

so enjoy muna.. save as much as you can. buy the things you've always wanted and travel on your days off to exotic places while you have that perk.. !

nursing will always be there.. it may not be easy to get a nursing job these days but it will be there whereas being young and slim.. possibly single.. will not be always the case.

visit muna all the places you want to see.. and be paid for it! my sister complains that it's a brain dead job but physically tiring.. hehehehe.. and maybe it is but when she's got days off in like paris/ venice/ new york.. she does feel that it is worth it.

those opportunities may not happen again for awhile.. cause even if nursing in australia pays well..it won't be the same money you guys get as an FA because of the cost living in australia is also high.

so keep it in the books..but don't rush..plan ahead.

I actually dont know where to start as I am not the nurse so I dunno what to ask re immigration for that skill. maybe one of my queries is where she should start :D
thanks. hope u cud give me some light & meet u in the future as well. :)

@mumloveslance first thing is get her docs/ielts/ expereince assessed by APHRA.. they are our nursing regulatory body.. then after you get an approval from them... they will tell you to find a bridging school.. marami..i have a post of the different schools somewhere here. it can vary from 3 months for those with good length of experience to 1 year to those with little or no experience..prices can vary from 9000- 30000k aud. then after the bridging, they will submit their pass papers to aphra and will get their oz nursing registration.

jobs are hard to get by for those with little experience..british/ european nurses are our toughest competition cause they have 10 or more years experience. so make sure whatever visa you get your sister allows her to study and look for a job in oz.

(it took me 4 months to find a job considering i have 7-8 years of nursing experience and almost half of that in new zealand..a couple of interviews/ approval but 4 months was the average time just to find a job) but i didn' t come to oz while waiting for a job eh.. i was working in nz and had my interviews by phones/ approval by phone and this was only possible because i've had my australian license for 2 years na before actually deciding to move to oz.

some are lucky to be given the opportunity to apply in their placement..but there is no job assurance after getting your license.. schools are not responsible in finding you jobs.

some did have to go home after their bridging/ getting their oz nursing license.. and kept applying for jobs in oz while in pinas and did all the interviews by phone or skypes. they processed their visas from the philippines too usually 457 visa sila..not a residency visa..

so first step is assessment from APHRA.

google it..so you can see their requirements:D

Its been a long time. :)

Hahaha. Andami talagang mga nurses sa airline na pinapasukan ko ngayon. Most of us may mga lofty dreams of leaving this job kasi sayang ang pinag aralan namin. Would you believe that in a hundred percent population ng mga pinay dito, close to 65-75 percent are nurses.

Flying is good, the job itself is fun. May position na rin ako but then nursing has been my first love and perhaps my one true love talaga. Yes, the perks are wonderful, 5 start hotels, you go to places and meet different people. However, believe me, nakakabrain drain ang flying at some point. The job is simple, repetitive pero I felt nakakabobo na sya. Hehe. Currently, I am reviewing when I am not flying but nothing seems to stick in my brain. The turning point why I wanted to go back to nursing was when we had a medical emergency and I just blacked out and it was nakakahiya and disappointing kasi my crew knew I was a nurse, a clinical instructor for that matter.

(Diary na ata ito ah!) :)

Anyway, ask ko lang, can I bring my partner there while I am still studying? And can he find a job related to his field (computer engineer sya, software tester)?

    Thank you agaaaaiinn. :D

Hi! Salamat po for this forum. Im a nurse here in Cebu aspiring to be a registered RN in Australia. I understand ganito po yung gagawin ko: 1.pass ielts 2.have aphra assess my credentials 3. If approved, find a good school offering BP then after a period of schooling aphra will decide if I am fit to be an AU RN. Then after that I will have to find a job on my own. I wonder if these steps still apply now that its 2015...kamusta po ba ang nurse employment status dyan sa aussie? I am currently working as a crit care nurse here in cebu and i have an aunt there in Brisbane also a crit care nurse...I wonder po if pwede po siya maging 'backer'? Thank you po
