WHEN Trevor Smith moved to Australia in late 2008, he found the transition easier than most. The 45-year-old South African engineer, now based in Perth, was tracing a well-worn path of his fellow countrymen, lured to Australia's booming resource sector - a trend he says has been steadily increasing in the past five years.
''Australia's by far and away the most popular destination for South African engineers,'' Smith says. ''I know quite a few other South African engineers based in Perth and elsewhere … from my generation I'd say for every 10 engineers that have emigrated, you're probably going to find more than half in Australia alone.''
