Bringing a computer into Australia

If a student arrives with a computer that has been owned and used for 12 months prior to departure to Australia, duties and taxes will not be charged on these goods. However, you may be asked to supply evidence of the length of ownership before the goods are cleared.

The Australian Customs Service (Customs) does allow the temporary importation of certain goods without the payment of duty or GST (via Section 162 of the Customs Act). The temporary importation of computers by international students is one such circumstance - but there are conditions imposed on students where such importations occur.

The temporary importation without the payment of duties and taxes is normally approved where the computers are to be exported within 12 months of their importation, and upon receipt of a written undertaking that all duties and taxes will be paid should the goods not be exported.

If your stay is known to be up to 24 months long, approval may be given - but this will depend on the value of the items involved. Each case is taken on its merit and the ability of the student to satisfy Customs that all duties and taxes will be paid if exportation of the goods is not undertaken by the agreed date.

Students whose stay is to exceed 24 months will not be given temporary importation approval for their goods.

There is a tax of approximately 10% which applies to computers that are being brought in as hand luggage and which do not meet the above requirements.

For computers that are sent by freight, there is a tax of approximately 10% of the value of the computer - as well as a tax of approximately 10% of the freight charges payable.

hi nope di po mahigpit now sa au, arrived here jul 06 dala ko laptop hand carry hinde pinansin, and sa baggage ko dala ko external harddrive 250gb dalawa hinde din pinansin, dont worry about it.

@JCsantos nope, it says "preparing to leave for", that means preparing to go to Adelaide, right? Read the article. There is nothing there that tells about leaving Adelaide. It says "The Australian Customs Service (Customs) does allow the temporary importation of certain goods without the payment of duty or GST (via Section 162 of the Customs Act).". Since temporary visa ka, Australia is temporarily importing your laptop. Yan po pag kakaintindi ko sir/,mam

@KG2 yep meron torrent downloads yung HDD ko etc, to be safe download nyo na lang storagecrypt to protect the HDD, but hinde na siguro check yan kung may record ka lang siguro sa immigration na threat ka hehe. But for ordinary people walang problem na siguro, they don't bother to check pa isa isa hassle lang.

@mikes yan din sabi sa isang blog na hindi daw chinicheck isa isa kasi nga pag ganun matatagalan. hehe. pero aalisin ko lang ang mga txt files ko na nagsasabing nadownload sa torrent. thanks, google ko ang storagecrypt?

@KG2 yup search lang google... encrypt nya yung external drive mo so that pag nawala man or iaccess di mabubuksan yung drive kase may encryption. di makikita data.. trial yun for 7 days... then pag nandito ka na sa au decrypt mo na lang ulet bago maexpire yung trial period.
