GTE Loopholes

Hi! I’m in the process of writing my GTE. Here are details about me:

Program: BS Nursing
School: Victoria University

Currently enrolled in BS Nursing in Philippines, but dropping once I get my visa granted.

The application for it requires a Statement of Purpose, and here’s my main points:

• Chose to study in AU because of limitations of the course in PH
• Lack of technical, hands-on courses in the degree (pandemic limitations)
• Little to no focus on developing intercultural communication skills
• Maintaining English proficiency level
• A Western degree is recognized should I decide to push through with my plans of pursuing a postgrad degree
• School I chose has a specialized program and developed facility for the degree I want
• I’d be going back to PH for a while to gain experience until my sister turns 18 (2 years after I graduate from my Bachelor’s)
• I’ll be pursuing travel nursing in USA

People have been saying that me going overseas would be a loophole. How should I phrase that? Thank you!

How many years of study have you completed in the Philippines? Have you received admission from VU for the program? What are the limitations of the nursing program in the Philippines?

Some of your points seem okay, but it doesn't feel very professional to say a lot of negative things about nursing degrees in the Philippines. There are plenty of Filipino nurses who do really well at work despite the training in the Philippines. I would recommend that you focus on writing your GTE in a more positive manner rather than looking down at the nursing program. For example, you can write "I'm looking for a more specialised program in nursing," instead of highlighting the things that nursing education back home "lack."

Also, those are just the points for explaining your reasons why you want to study in Australia. What you should focus more on is establishing your home ties. What will make you return home? Have a read on what they're looking for in a GTE:

If you are looking to do travel nursing in the USA, I would kind of question why you are looking to study in Australia and not the USA? Would studying in Australia mean that you don't have to take any exams to work in the USA? How much different are the nursing programs in Australia and USA?

Hello! Thank you so much for your response. It was kinda iffy putting negative things about nursing here in the PH, but the way you put it kind of took words out of my mouth. As for my home ties, I want to go back and create an organization that caters to mental health. MH remains a topic not fully open in the country, and I want to change that and be part of the change I'm talking about. I recently enrolled in another university that puts emphasis on mental health, and am more than happy to be accepted in their program.

For travel nursing, there was a change of heart as my best friend (who studies psychology) and I talked about being able to create a stepping stone into destigmatizing the concept of mental health in the Philippines. I guess I could write that instead :)

In addition, my immediate family stays in the Philippines and intends to stay there since my dad recently created a business, and my mom is in charge of its operations. In addition, my sister doesn't really want to move away from my family. Thank you for your input!
