Integration with Foreigners

My roomate told me a story she has a Singaporean friend who went to Ireland to migrate. And the guy instead of looking for fellow singaporeans, he made friends mostly with local irish people. His reason is that when you move in another country, you should study their cultures and make friends with local people. Cuz if yer gunna look for yer same countrymen and practice yer own culture, then why leave yer country for the first place?

This got stuck in my head. I think he's right. We should try and integrate ourselves with local people when we migrate overseas. I have a question for people staying in Australia, do you guys make friends with aussies and other foreigners? Or do you prefer making friends only with pinoys or foreigners? Please share your thoughts thanks in advance! :)

I have officemates also from india, sg, myanmar, china, hongkong. All of them are nice naman. In my case I just thought for a difference, Ill try to make more foreigner friends when I get to aus cuz that story above got stuck in my mind. We should not limit ourselves just making friends with pinoys, if you want it that way you could just stay in the Philippines so all yer friends would be pinoys. It was just a mind opener for me I guess.

Yeah I agree with you aldous, most people have same kakulitan din its just that our language is different. Went to Krabi last summer and we took this island hopping trip for 9 islands it was like 10am to 8pm (the longest island hop ive joined in my life but the best and worth it!) and most of the passengers were brits and it was like 2pm and were in the middle of the sea and some people were snorkeling and I was about to eat so I put out the mcdonalds burger I bought in the morning. And one of the brit say oh you got mcdonalds? And I told him yep I ordered it just now and the mcdonald delivery guy just swim to reach the boat. And they all laugh hehe. Parang pag ngcrack ka ng joke gets din nila ahehehe. :)

it is an interesting topic, Paris, thumps up for opening the thread ;)

yes, of course you can make friends with other nationalities or races, why not. we are all living in this so called kaleidoscope world. it is basically one good way to show our guts to other races, not to mention the well-knowned filipina charm ;)

this is the first step to embrace globalization, integration and assimilation. all the best of luck to you! ;)

thanks bethpie goodluck on yer ielts test! its a good excuse to meet aussie chaps i guess just kidding haha! But I guess if where in a foreign land, just try to avoid being xenophopic, making an effort to blend in is a right thing to do.

agree... but i think its a natural tendency for humans (and animals) to find someone who is like us.. its a mechanism to help us cope easily...

but since we are in a new land, we just have to have an open mind..
it is interesting that even though we are different from someone.. we can still find commonalities (hobbies, work, sports)... and that is the best way to start a conversation or find new friends...

In other countries, YOU are the foreigner. :D

In such pinoy-ridden countries as singapore and the uae, hindi imposibleng magkaroon ng community. Pero kapag wala nang masyadong kabayan, no choice kundi mag-adapt. Hindi ko lang talaga ma-gets ang cricket.

It will take sometime bago ma-appreciate ang cricket, pero daming Pinoys na enjoy manuod kahit sa TV lang. If you watch international one-day tournaments, baka ma hook din kayo.
