Watusi is what you see

Sa mga bagong dating po dito sa Australia, eto lang po ang mga sarili kong na obserbahan sa ilang taon na pagtatrabaho at pag-iikot sa iba't-ibang lugar. Opinyon lang po ito ng isang tao at maaring may iba na di sang ayon (no worries) o sang ayon (tenk yu kung ganun).

1. Pagnagmamaneho sa daan, maski nasa tamang speed limit ka na ay may mag oovertake pa rin sa yo kasi ayaw nila ng may sinusundan, o kaya ay magovertake sa yo at pupwesto sa harap mo. Parating plus 10 km ang takbo nila ober da i-speed limit. Lalo na kapag malaking sasakyan mahilig silang manutok. Pero pati rin yung ibang mga naka Harley na motor wala rin pakialam sa speed limit. Marami rin pong mga LOL - Lasing Over the Limit- dahil mahilig talaga silang uminom ng pampa sira ng utak. Kaya ingat lang po kayo.

2. Pagbumibili sa malalaking sari-sari na tindahan mararamdaman mo ang trato sa yo kapag iba yung itsura mo sa kanila. Meron din namang mababait at maasikaso pero kadalasan ang pagserbisyo nila sa mga bumibili ay di taus-puso at balat-kayo lang. Ultimong pagbati sa mga bumibili ay gagawin lang nila sa mga kasing itsura nila. Siguro kasi di nila sigurado kung nakakaintindi ng inggles ang mga ibang itsura? Hello???

3. Nakapunta ako sa isang seminar noong araw na inutos ng kompanya ko dati at narinig ko nagsalita ang isang bisor na awsi na ang mga noypi daw eh oo lang ng oo kapag nagbibigay sila ng instruksyon pero di naman naiintindihan yung mga sinabi nila. Susmariosep...eh ganun nga lang ginagawa nila- utos ng utos, salita ng salita pero sa iba naman pinapaubaya yung maraming trabaho. At iba pa rin ang abilidad ng mga katulad natin. Kawawa lang talaga tayo dahil maski pareho ka ng posisyon sa isang katrabaho, basta namumula lang ang balat nila pagnaarawan sa dagat eh tiyak na masmataas yung sweldo nila base lang sa kulay ng balat. At sila pa iting mahilig magpa kulay ng balat natin...nyah!

4. Nakakalungkot din yung mga kalahi natin na dito na lumaki mula pagkabata o pinanganak dito na di na marunong o makaintindi ng sarili nating wika. At lalo na kung ayaw nilang matawag na noypi. Oo nga...Made In Australia ka nga pero tignan mo yung sarili mo sa salamin at dapat hwag mo kalimutan yung pinanggalingan ng lahi mo at irespeto mo pa rin yun. Hanga ako sa mga magulang na tinuruan nila ang mga anak nila ng sariling wika natin maski dito lumaki o pinanganak. Mga dakila po kayong magulang!

5. Nakauwi kami nito lang para makasama ang pamilya at mga kaibigan sa Pinas. Bakit ganun ang inflation sa Pinas? Presyo ng gasolina, kotse, bahay, bilihin sa mga tindahan ng pagkain, laruan at mga damit ay halos kasing presyo na rin dito sa ibang bansa? At grabe na po ang trapik sa Pinas. Baka ilang taon na lang di na gagalaw ang mga sasakyan sa kalsada. At dahil din sa polusyon mukhang madumi ang mga gusali at mga bahay. Haaay...hwatalayp....pero balik po tayo dito sa ibang bansa...nalihis ako ng konti....

6. Kung manganganak ka dito sagot ng gobyerno kung pr o citizen ka. May panggastos ka pa sa mga ibang kailangan bilin katulad ng mga diaper, formula at mga gamot. Kaya malaking pasasalamat po pero hwag po natin abusuhin yung sistema dito kungdi.. HULI KA...one way or di oder.

7. Ingat lang po sa ibang kalahi din natin dahil dala pa rin karamihan ang ugaling alimango o yung crab mentality. Marami ang ayaw malamangan. Akala mo kaibigan mo at mabait sa yo at pinapakain ka hanggat tumaba ka pero pag tumalikod ka na e sinusumpa at pinaguusapan ka na ng masama. Hwag naman po ganyan. Dapat lang e nagtutulong-tulong tayo sa isa't isa pa rin. We can all rich da coconut-nut ip wi help itch ader.

8. Pag ang salita mo ay iba sa lokal, kadalasan ayaw ka nilang kausapin. Ibang mga lahi na tipu ay nakakaranas din ng diskriminasyon pag ayaw nila o di nila naiintindihan yung salita.

    Natawa naman ako dito.....sasagot ako for the benefit of those who "respectfully disagree"

    1. Saan po kayong city??? kasi so far sa melbourne generally hindi naman ganito ang aming na experience. While driving, keep left unless overtaking. wala naman tayong ownership sa right lane. And so far sa experience ko, karamihan asians ang mahilig mag cut, mag tail gate, driving 10k lesser than speed limit at hindi gumagamit ng signal (lalo na yong mga pana-disclaimer: hindi ako racist, nakakaobserve lang)

    2. hindi naman kailangan taus puso ang serbisyo sa atin. importante lang madeliver nila ang hinihingi natin ng tama at mabilis. hindi kasama sa bayad nila ang pagiging super friends sa atin. alalahanin rin natin baka pagod na rin sila or may pinagdadaanan lang. trabaho lang walang personalan.

    3. matuto magsabi ng hindi at hindi ko alam. kung hindi kaya, sabihin lang "i am busy". hwag rin mahiya magsabi "i dont know that and i do not understand you'. kami ni misis pareho kaming puro aussie ang kawork and so far hindi naman kami nahirapan sa kanila. sa totoo lang, mas understanding ang mga aussie towards our limitations kumpara sa mga pinoy (based on my experience)

    4. sobra naman ang accusation na ito. ang tawag dito ay "INTEGRATION". hindi masama mag intergrate kuya. knowing your roots doesnt mean you need to learn to speak Filipino. you cannot impose your belief on others. tanungin mo rin ang sarili mo kuya, ikaw ba, saan ang loyalty mo? sa pilipinas ba o sa australia? kasi yong mga batang lumaki dito, most likely dito ang loyalty nila, kaya wala na ang heart nila sa Pilipinas. Australia is their home, kaya hwag nega if they see themselves as Australians. Hindi naman nila pinili pumunta dito...their parents made that choice.

    6. hindi technically libre ang panganganak kuya. bayad yon kasi nagbabayad tayo ng medical levy. pwera na lang kung yong tipong ALL YOUR LIFE nakasalalay ka na lng sa welfare. Pag "able ka magwork" at naka welfare ka at libre ang medical mo, hindi "libre ang tawag doon".....tawag doon, pabigat sa gobyerno.

    8. wrong.....hindi porket ayaw ka kausapin, discrimated kana agad. wala naman silang business sa iyo bakit sila makikipag usap???? people talk because they have something to talk about... at kung hindi ka nila maintindihan, it is a good reminder for us to improve ourselves. ang sabi nga nila, the best way to integrate is to learn the language and the culture.

    ang haba ng sagot ko pero ito na lang... we are here in Australia. Let us try our best to integrate in the society and not impose our set of beliefs....unless our beliefs could make a positive change in the society. Para sa akin aussie people are one of the nicest, GENEROUS and respectful people. wala namang perfect na society, pero generally speaking, i have a very positive experience here.

    Gft_SG, maraming salamat po sa sinulat niyo at nirerespeto ko po opinyon niyo. Salamat din po for sharing your positive experience.
    Mga comment ko lang po:

    1. I ALWAYS keep left when driving and at the required speed limit and give way to faster vehicles but still encounter idiots on the road who don't care about speed limits and the safety of others on the road, irregardless of their cultural background and what I mentioned is what I observed on a daily basis whenever I go to work or drive on long trips. I have been to Melbourne previously and have also witnessed non Asian drivers behave badly on the roads especially with their V8s and fast utes and modified import cars. So I guess it all depends on what you yourself have encountered.

    2. I have to disagree with this because they really do need to improve their quality of customer service to their clients. If you only accept it as a norm and assume they are always tired or have issues, they shouldn't really pass their personal problems on to affect their customers and treat their clients in a negative way. The upftont attitude they show towards their customers can have an impact on whether the customer will be satisfied or not and good service means repeat business. I am not talking about being super friends with customers, but about being hospitable and friendly to clients, not being snobs or show a disgruntled attitude. And besides they have been trained at work in regards to customer service and they are the face of the company so I would say that they should display a genuine customer service attitude in representing their organisation. There are others who can and show excellent service to their clients so they should be role models for others that need to improve.

    3. I'm glad that you and your wife have found a workplace that you are comfortable and well adapted to. Good onya then. But spare a thought for those who do have to work in an environment that they are seen and treated as second class citizens. I was just saddened to hear that (what I mentioned earlier) when I attended that seminar so I also agree with your point in that they do need to learn to speak up if they do not understand the slang and instructions given to them. I have very high respect with our culture's work ethic and "kasipagan" in various industries.

    4. To clarify further again this is just based on what I have observed. Yes it's not their fault that they were born here I give you that. But sometimes we have to try as responsible parents to teach our children about our language and culture. For example, I have two realtives who raised their children differently and all were born and raised here in Oz. One did not teach their children to speak our native language while the other taught all their children to speak and understand the language. There is a BIG difference in attitude and outlook with the latter showing more understanding towards our culture while the former shows a more ignorant view of the culture.

    8. Hmmm...really? I would disagree as we do have friends from other cultures who feel the same way about some locals. And you'd be surprised that they are non Asians too. Que sera sera.

    On your last note I firmly agree that we do have to try our best to integrate and to contribute positively in the society. And yes there are people here who are nice, generous, and respectful and I do have high regard for them and that society can never be perfect. But if more people would recognise the faults and really just try to improve and be selfless, then maybe, just maybe, things would be a whole lot better.

    Tama si Juan, trabaho nila yan - customer service or being in the sales team. So pranka dapat - 'what, you're not buying. GTFO'. Or 'Do you agree with the terms, no? Got more clients to contact'.

    Yung chinese bbq na kinakainan ko may local aussie nag order ng takeaway tapos nagbago isip nya after ibalot, sabi nya dine in na lang pero yung owner sabi hindi pwde at binalot na. Sabi ng aussie dun na lang sa takeaway box nya kakainin pero yung owner insisted na hindi pwde, gusto nya talagang paalisin yung aussie. Well pranka yung owner, ayaw nya dun sa tao. Gustu mu ba ng ganun? Ako suki ako dun kasi mabait sa akin nung owner, haha :)

    Madaming dahilan, yung iba need to impress for promotion or waiting for retirement; yung iba kailangan mag-deliver kahit slave driver yung amo, hindi maka palag kasi work visa at nag aantay lang maging citizen tska lilipat; yung iba nasa personalidad yung pagiging 'yes man'.

    That's true pero mas deeper ang pakikitungo pag nag tagalog. Hindi ba na mas masarap ang usapan kung tagalog. I respect yung decision ng parents not to teach filipino whatever the reason, pero mas hanga ako sa upbringing kung naituro nila ito sa anak.

    That's true pero dapat understanding din sila sa limitations mu na english ay secondary language. Well, for me medyo bopols ako sa grammar lalu na sa mga current affairs na topic, pero yung mga colleagues ko ok naman sila. Na gets naman nila yung kinikwento ko, kahit baluktot gramar ko, haha. Pero may point ka na kailangan mag improve.

    Although, may mga locals din na mapag mataas, pag hindi local accent ay hindi ka nila iintindihin. Ganun talaga, iwas na lang sa kanila.

    Isa pang napansin ko ay yung gender gap. Pag gen x or older ang conversation ay mga houseworks, footy, politics. Pag millennials ay party, inuman, ilan yung tininder, paanu mu tininder. Sa work environment ko, hindi masyadong nag uusap yung gen x at gen tinder :)

    Mag three years pa lang kami. let me just be clear, i have no delusion that we don't have erring drivers here.....Just pointing out that it is not as bad as how juan illustrates it. It is generally safe to drive here....(the thread is meant to warn new comers isn't it?)..it is good to warn people to be careful, but it is bad to give impression to new comers that driving here is it that bad! hwag lang mag exaggerate.

    Hindi ko gusto ganun and i don't have any hesitation to say to somebody "i am sorry but you are rude" if they do deserve to know it.......as I said earlier, my personal expectation is have my request delivered right and on time (on issue of customer service). Di hamak naman na mas maayos dito ang serbisyo, kesa sa pilipinas na ngingitian ka nga pero 10 oras naman bago ibigay sayo ang serbisyo pwera na lang kung pormang mayaman ka. common guys, we expect too much in a society that is multicultural and where majority is trying to have a maximum tolerance to diversity. kung hindi ka naintindihan sa pag english mo, "DON'T BE OFFENDED" but try your best to improve (sinabi ko na ito, but i just want to stress it out). Kung hindi nakangiti sa iyo ang "local" habang ginagawa ng tama ang serbisyong hinihingi mo, red flag na agad???? Hindi na agad tama ang customer service?

    May tinatawag na resignation...may ombudsman rin kung saan pwede mag raise ng concerns about racial discrimination.... matanong ko lang, sa mga nakaranas ng discrimination, may nakagawa na ba ng mga steps na ito??????? if hindi pa, it is good to be informed...para naman doon sa mga naka work visa, did you even try to speak to your boss about it? sandali lang baka noong kinausap mo naman masyado ka nang emotional.... ah kasi pinoy eh kaya emotional....common guys, speak up and try to integrate! hindi excuse ang pagiging pinoy. and sa totoo lang yong "yes man" na ugali, hindi maganda....commitments are supposed to be met kaya hwag mag commit kung hindi kaya.just imagine affecting somebody else's work dahil naka pending sa iyo.... Hindi talga tama!!!!!

    Paanu kung madalas itong mangyari sa area/suburb niya or sa pang araw araw nyang pag drive. I think the morale of this is to enroll in defensive driving. Inoofer ito sa work namin free, lalu na sa mga baguhan.

    Wala namang nabanggit na dapat naka-ngiti. Ang pagkaka-intindi ko ay - there's some indication of discrimination dun sa experience ni Juan. I've also had experienced this a few times. Isa sa mga minimum level of service ay equality (race, religion, color, etc), hindi lang on time delivery.

    Wrong, this is the worst advise! You cannot just impose resignation or mag-sumbong sa ombudsman baka lalo pang mas lumala ang problema. Maraming underlying factor to consider. May mga problema na baka surface crack lang ang discrimination. Sabi ko nga maraming dahilan.

    Yes hindi maganda, but this is a part of their nature. Would you say this to a person with OCD. Speak up, integrate - I wonder why australia's suicide rate has peaked. Oh yeah, they can't speak up and integrate.

    I think Juan is just trying to appeal na mas maganda kung imulat sa pinoy na kultura yung anak. Lahat ng mga kakilala kong 'local' na chinese dito na pinanganak at lumaki mahusay sa chinese.

    Discrimination, bullying, these are not fearmongering. It's just reality. Kahit sa pinas you can experience these. I think the lesson I got from Juan is preparedness (calm, cool, talk you your community/friends/family, etc) instead of fearmongering.

    Oh well....i would conclude by saying this

    1. May functional police dito....doon magsumbong sa police regarding sa problema sa erring driver....but i stand by my statement. Exaggerated ang description nyo sa erring driver.

    2. Kung yes man ka problema m yan at ikaw ang dpaat magayos nyan...kung may ocd ka, may psychiatrist dito.. kung ayawmo sa ombudsman, ayaw mo sa confrontation at may complex reason ka, nasa sa iyo ang problema kasi ayaw mo ayusin ang problema... that doesnt allow you to give ill statements about work culture here. Hindi discrimination ang issue... ang issue na doon your failure to deal the matter.
    3. Ingat na lang sa mga judgmental na pinoy. Paalala you dont need to Be filipino to have good values Pero
    May mga iba mahilig rin mag insist...embrace how to be australian and say "its none of yourbusiness.... akala rin kasi ng iba pag pinoy na pinoy ang ugali maayos na agad...reality check, ganyan ba ka maayos ang pilipinas?
