Help with filing Tax return

bluntforcephbluntforceph SydneyPosts: 8Member
Hello friends :)
I just arrived in AU 01 April of this year (already PR) and just started my job in June. I believe I need to file a tax return but not sure how. Meron nako mygov saka naka link na yung ATO. Wala ako idea kung paano gagawin. Is it pretty straightforward sa mygov? And may makukuha kaya ako after lodging? haha

Your employer will provide you with the PAYG details that you need to fill in your return sa income part. Then if you have deductions to claim may ibang sections for that.

    @bluntforceph @cholle hello mates. :)

I plan to lodge via myGov / ATO this year around (last year I did via accountant). I can see in the ATO when I login the Lodge button.

Do you guys read any tutorial to accomplish this? If yes, can you share it here and I will read it before I try.

@pinoytalker @agentKams Thanks for the link, its helpful for setting up your myGov and ATO account. As for the actual steps during lodge, I am unable to find any tutorials. However, in the same link that you provided, there was a link to something called Tax Help Program https://www.ato.gov.au/individuals/lodging-your-tax-return/tax-help-program/; although you need to fulfill the specific criteria to avail of this service.

In the end, I asked one of my teammates here in the office, turns out he uses the ATO to lodge his taxes and he gave me a few pointers. The most important bit that he told me is that once you click the lodge button, it doesn't mean that its touch move. You can edit / update or even cancel your lodgement anytime.

So I went ahead and click the Lodge, saw there were 4 steps:
    1. Contact Details (easy) - just update your details

    2. Bank Details (easy) - just update your bank details to where ATO will deposit the refund

    3. Personalise Return (hard) - there's alot of checkboxes here, I haven't figured out completely which ones I need to check, still in-progress for me, you can put some temporary checkboxes if you just want to be able to get to step 4

    4. Prepare Return (hard) - this is where the PAYG is meant to appear, pre-filled once your employer(s) have reported it here as per my understanding. this is also where you put in the tax deductions if any, finally it has the calculate button to determine the tax refund correct? Again like step 3, still in-progress for me, since there are no PAYG yet.

@m0t0k0 ang medyo tricky lang naman diyan iyong sa medicare. deductions are straightforward though dapat maging careful din in claiming. just search the ATO website may mga separate sila na explanation for each.

@m0t0k0 i also tried to login in to my ATO account and it will be my first time din to file a tax return. Ang pagkakaintindi ko is yung first $18,200 is tax free pero when I tried to calculate my return, nakalagay sa details na yung taxable income ko is still yung gross salary ko na nasa PAYG. Would you know kung pano nila idededuct yung $18,200 sa taxable income?

@nikx no I am not sure myself, pero last year when I migrated around april, my salary by eofy was below the threshold and I received all the tax I paid. however, I used an accountant last time and did not see it via ATO's myTax

I have not completed this year's tax return yet since none of my PAYG are in the system as of the current posting.

@nikx @agentKams found 2 videos by ATO which shows the 4 steps, it was a child page under the parent page that @agentKams gave earlier.

This is the link to the child page which has 2 videos:

@nikx hello, graduated tax rates ang calculation ng tax, just like in PH. if you exceed the threshold of $18,200 tax is calculated at your taxable income na at progressive rates. on top of that medicare levy of 2% is also calculated.

    Hello Guys!

Ask ko lang, newbie lang kami sa oz so we haven't filed any tax return yet and we are trying to understand their tax system and got me thinking since we still have some investments back home like bank deposits and stocks, do we need to declare the earnings? Sabi kasi if you are an australian resident for tax purposes, worldwide income sya. (Considered as au resident if migrating with the intention to stay permanently).

    Thanks,

@Lrac are they subjected for final withholding tax in the Phils already? if yes, you may not declare it. try to check kung may tax treaty ang philippines with australia ( i believe meron), pra iwas sa double taxation.

@agentKams yes, they do. Bank deposits are subjected to a 20%ft while stocks are subjected to sales tax of 0.6% and dividends are subjected to 10%ft. They do have a treaty but it's quite difficult understanding it. Hehe For the bank interest, I think it's ok not to declare since cents or less than 10aud ifever however for the stocks, paano kaya yung mga realized gains/losses and dividends if any for FY 2018-19.

    Thanks,
