Free Wi-Fi for downtown Adelaide

The city of Adelaide will get Australia’s first free large scale CBD Wi-Fi network. It will be funded by the South Australian Government and Adelaide City Council.

A feasibility study has been completed and proposals from technology firms are now being sought, ABC News reports. The government will provide $1 million and the council $500.000. A feasibility study and trials on Adelaide buses and trams have already been completed. The system is expected to be operational within 12 months.

Announcing the expanded project, South Australian Premier Jay Weatherill said that Adelaide would be the first city in Australia with such a service, and would join cities like Auckland, Luxembourg, Prague and Singapore. “It will encourage shoppers, diners, students and tourists to spend more time in the city,” ABC News reports Weatherill as saying.

"We want to project the image of Adelaide being a modern, progressive city and to do that you've got to have the latest technology. This will give us the real edge on any other capital city in the nation because we want to attract more people into the city and this is how you get public life, you give people the opportunities to do the things they need to do in public spaces.”
