Hello everyone,
I have a question about the student visa. Is it possible to have a dependent in VET courses? Are the work rights the same as the main applicant's, or do they depend on the case officer?
Thank you.

Work Rights – Secondary (Dependent) Visa Holder – Condition 8104
Spouses and children of students can generally work for 48 hours per fortnight under the 8104 condition (from July 1, 2023). The work rights for secondary visa holders come into effect when the main student commences studies. The dependent can only work 48 hours per fortnight – whether it is during semester or during semester break.
If the student is studying a Masters or PhD, dependents can work full time.
The 8104 condition carries the following recommendation from the Department of Home Affairs:

Thank you so much for that information.
I have an additional question regarding the Masters of Engineering in Mechatronics program. Currently, we are in search of a reputable institution that not only offers high-quality education but also boasts a strong reputation among employers and companies. We believe that being associated with a recognized school can significantly enhance one's acceptance rate. However, we are also conscious of the affordability factor.

Work rights for Masters and PHD also changed since July 2023. Now back to 48 hours a fortnight except if doing research work.
