Seeing the numbers from the table above , 190 is oversubscribed by 15k, 189 has 10k left to fill this FY to meet the planned grants for this year

Hey, I'd love to hear your thoughts on what you think might happen in the next fiscal year regarding the migration strategy. What are your predictions?

Australia is basing their migration levels on Net Overseas Migration. Recent changes to temporary visas have greatly affected students, while skilled workers are given priority for fast-track processing. A new In-Demand Skills Visa with Permanent Residency pathways is coming soon. Tourist visa holders are being rejected by universities for student visa applications.

For permanent visas, this still accounts for a significant portion of the pie with 160K before the pandemic and an increase to 190K after.

For this year, their NOM plan is 375K, down from last FY's peak of 510K. They plan to further reduce it to 250K by 2025.

They may reduce it further but not too much since they mostly need skilled workers. With those numbers, if the migration planning levels for GSM remain at 190K, only 60K will be allotted for other transient visas.

"I believe that the quotas for certain visa categories will be reduced further as a result of the new policies. By that time, some temporary visas will have pathways to permanent residency, so it makes sense to apply for an In-Demand Skills Visa in the new migration year. This will enable a smoother transition into Australian society once the visa is granted."

I think the GSM visas will be reformed to be more competitive since they offer instant PR pathways.
Overall, the quota will increase in a new format by combining GSM with in-demand skills visas, which will contribute to a larger pool of permanent migration in the long term.

Have you ever thought about how the student pathway might not be as lucrative for older applicants? It's something that's been on my mind lately.

Madaming recalibration sa points calculation ah. Yung iba kasi yatang skilled PR nagtransition na to being social media influencers / digital creators - whatever you may want to call them. Or anything not in their nominated fields anymore. Seems like it's a restrospective mostly during pandemic, although not fair, it just might have not served its purpose for DHA.

These new strategies could be favorable to those skilled holding temporary visas -- fair enough. :) Advantage na din talaga kapag may skilled partner.

Nawa'y maging effective ito at maiwasan yung plague that's happening to Canada right now, for a more livable Aus haha. 😅

Also a good note na the job market is really bad right now, not just in Australia pero globally din. Might not be the case for all occupations of course pero it's gotten bad since 2024 started. Naggrow din yung AU population (expected)—ang tindi ng 100+ applications for a lot of jobs. I guess that's an upside if you're waiting, you can ride out this market dip, which some are saying will fade out later this year bago mag-uptick in 2025. Not sure if this affects migration planning.

+1 sa having plans B to Z. If may comfortable buffer kayo, grab other opportunities while waiting :)

This is so true. Makikita naman sa LinkedIn for example yung number of applicants for a particular job. :D

This too shall pass. But, yeah, it's always good to plan one's every move until then. ;)

    Brace yourselves.

Government is said to be poised "to halve net migration by next year"...

More on housing crisis... On the contrary they need more people. :#

The government can manage the Net Overseas Migration (NOM) by adjusting the number of international arrivals, particularly through temporary skills visas and student visas. However, it’s also important to balance this with the need to keep talented individuals within the country. They’ve set a goal to bring the NOM down to 250,000 by 2025, which is quite a change from last year’s high numbers. It’s all about finding the right equilibrium to ensure progress and growth. 😊

Just my two cents , that report is still in preliminary stage , may 3 files maaring nakita mo yung definitely na mapa sama sa CSOL, may isa pang list na hindi na isasama at isa pa na list na for under consultation. It is too early to tell. This draft CSOL will be use to determine the occupations na pasok sa In Demand Skills Visas na may three categories.
For now nothing can be concluded.

Certainly! Here's a summary of the key points from the Albanese Government's Migration Strategy update:

    • English Language Requirements: Increased for student visas from IELTS 5.5 to 6.0, and for graduate visas from IELTS 6.0 to 6.5.
    • Section 97 Powers: Enables the government to suspend high-risk education providers from recruiting international students.
    • Genuine Student Test: A new measure to assess the intentions of international students, ensuring they aim to study rather than primarily work in Australia.
    • Visitor Visa Conditions: "No further stay" conditions will be more commonly imposed to maintain the integrity of offshore student visa applications.
    • Migration Decline: Government actions have led to a 35% decrease in international student visa grants compared to the previous year.

These steps are part of the government's efforts to address issues in the migration system and ensure that students coming to Australia are well-prepared and genuine in their intentions to study.

Is Australia Ready for Zero Migration ?

Certainly! Here's a summary of the potential impact of zero-migration on Australia:

    • Population Growth: Without migration, Australia's population in 2034 would be 27.2 million, 4.4 million fewer than with high migration.
    • Housing: The zero-migration scenario might seem appealing due to the current housing shortage and the difficulty in building new homes due to a lack of workers.
    • Ageing Population: The ageing of the nation continues regardless of migration. By 2036, the number of Australians over 85 is expected to double, increasing the need for aged care.
    • Workforce: Over 75% of migrants are aged 18 to 39, contributing to the workforce, especially in sectors like civil construction and aged care, which rely on migrants.
    • Economic Impact: A significant portion of the workforce consists of migrants. Restructuring the economy without them could potentially reduce wealth and productivity.

In essence, migration is a key factor in Australia's demographic and economic growth, influencing various aspects of society from the labor market to the care sector².

Thanks for sharing this. It’s sad to see a lot of occupations being considered to be removed in the CSOL. I saw Engineering Technologist on consultation.

On the other hand, I agree with @Ozdrims as long as this is not final wala tayo magagawa kundi maghintay sa announcement from DHA themselves.

Politics plays a huge role in this. Next election is on September 2025. Even if the economy needs more migrant workers if the population has negative connotations on importing people for jobs then the government will make a show on halving or even reducing the amount of migrants that they allow inside AU.

After the upcoming 2025 elections, we might see a change in the migration system again depending on who or which party wins.

**Regarding the Action Plan of Considering A Reformed Points Test **

Under the Migration Strategy Action Plan the discussion paper is due to be published by the gov't this early 2024. (If this is done , it should be somewhere by now)

For a context of the timeline it takes to bring an ambitious plan:

The Migration Strategy Review was formed and started through a discussion paper - 483 submissions were received and an independent panel came out with the findings submitted to the gov't. It took a while before the final Migration Strategy Report came out and finally an Action Plan was made Public in Dec 2023 by the Albanese gov't.

From Oct 2022 to Dec 2023 is the above timeline.

I can see one thing from the above - the Reformed Points Test is not possible for implementation next FY . As it will take time.

I read some comments about using naati score, they will give a due date that who ever passed before this date can still used the naati for additional points. They should consider also the fee for this exam.

The draft Core Skills Occupations List (CSOL) will have significant implications for Australia's skilled migration programs. The CSOL is being developed to better target the temporary skilled migration system to Australia’s workforce needs. Here's how it will impact the skilled migration programs:

    1. New Visa Categories: The CSOL will influence the creation of new visa categories under Australia's Migration Strategy, such as the Specialist Skills Pathway, Core Skills Pathway, and Skills in Demand Pathway².

    2. Eligibility for Visa Sponsorship: The occupations listed on the final CSOL will determine which jobs are eligible for visa sponsorship by employers, particularly under the Core Skills Pathway².

    3. Labour Market Analysis: Jobs and Skills Australia will use a Migration Labour Market Indicator Model to inform the CSOL, considering factors like labour market performance of migrants, reliance on sponsored skilled visa holders, vacancy data, and domestic labour supply¹.

    4. Workforce Development: The CSOL will act as a blueprint for workforce development, guiding immigration policy to meet labour market demands and shaping educational programs to align with future skills requirements⁵.

    5. Policy Reform: The CSOL is part of a broader reform to Australia’s migration system, aiming to streamline the process and make it more responsive to the country's skill needs¹.

    6. Stakeholder Engagement: The development of the CSOL includes extensive stakeholder engagement to ensure that it reflects the needs and experiences of businesses, workers, job seekers, and other relevant groups¹.

The CSOL is still in the consultation phase, and the final list will be provided to the Government later this year. The impact on skilled migration programs will become clearer once the final CSOL is approved and implemented. For more information on the CSOL and its development process, you can visit the Jobs and Skills Australia website.

This is part of the submission of NSW as part of the consultation that formed the Migration Strategy , I did not see this points in the Migration Final Report or in the Migration Strategy itself , but what we were thinking what if allocations can be best allocated gaya ng transferring allocations from 189 to 190 is also been well thought of by the state government itself.

Sa mga inputs ni NSW to the AU gov't ito yung mga points na nakakabuti rin sa state /territory levels eh at mga future applicants:

Greater flexibility of when and how to use the allocations,
More allocations to cater to local needs in the state
PR pathways for International Students and
Re-purpose the allocations from Skilled Independent visas to state-nominated visas.

**Points test review paper is set to be analyzed by Australian National University, this was in the plan of Action - early 2024. **

Smaller migration intake but giving TVs with PR Pathways is an upgrade

NOM is expected to be in 260,000 by 2025 and to continue till 2027.

From Au gov't website naman , official statement regarding the Review of the Migration Points Test:

"The Migration Review found that a reformed Points Test should:

_Focus on characteristics that are associated with migrants successfully finding skilled work

Better target the skills Australia needs now and in the future

Give applicants a realistic sense of the likely success of their application and not drive ‘permanent temporariness’

Reflect that younger migrants will spend more years contributing to Australian workplaces

Better recognize the potential contributions to Australia from partners.

The Government has begun work on reforming the Points Test by commissioning the Australian National University to analyse the factors that drive success in Australia._

This discussion paper explores how a better Points Test can meet the objectives of our Migration System, improve living standards and create a system that is efficient and fair towards the migrants who decide to build their lives here.

Submissions to this phase of consultation will close on the 24th May 2024."

giving incentive to partner contribution would mean that single applicants will be glossed over (as what VIC has been doing).

on the other hand scrapping other point accumulating factors such as NAATI, and PY is a decent move since accdg to their study it doesn’t improve job prospects.

nabasa ko din sa discussion paper nila na they are contemplating adding points to individuals who will have job offers. (aka like NZ skilled visas). This would be bad sa mga offshore since a job offer is basically impossible sa offshore candidates because of the conundrum that: job posting > need visa > visa > need job offer. It would significantly reduce the number of applicants making the minimum point requirements to be invited. If companies are not willing to offer job to offshore candidates without a visa.
