Housewife (or houseband) in Australia

edited July 2013 in Family Matters
Hello! As everyone is busy applying for their visas and applying for their dream jobs in Australia, here I am wondering how is it like living as a housewife down under. lol! It's my secret dream after all!

Pa'no niyo pinapatakbo ang household niyo at mabansagang SuperMOM or Superwifey, or SuperHubby? hehe

It's very possible to afford be a stay at home parent in Australia but, that depends on a lot of things - mortgage or renting? car repayments or using public transport?, do you have children who go to day care or school age children, do you have private health cover?

To give you an idea, my husband works full time, I only work part time because we have a young child who goes to day care when were at work. We are renting a house and paying 2 cars. We cant afford for me to stay at home because my husband who earns about 800/week cant pay rent and other bills by himself. If I do decide to stay at home we will get some support from centrelink but still wouldnt be enough to cover the cost of running the household and paying for food.

My son is turning 2 in September. I can only give you a rough estimate on some things. We pay rent is 380/wk, food is maybe 200/wk. My son goes to day care 3x week and I pay about 70/week but this is based on a 75/day rate day care and I live in a regional city. I know in some big cities day care cost up to 110/day so you have to take in consideration where you live when thinking about childcare cost. I receive both childcare benefit and child care rebate thats why I only pay around 70/wk for my son's daycare. If I decide to go back to work full time my childcare benefit and rebate will be adjusted and I will have to shoulder more of the cost of the fees because the more you earn the less benefits you should receive. Thats why I decided its best for me to just keep working part time, its less stressful and I get to spend time with my son.

When I say part time I meant I dont work a full week job, I only work 3 days a week but Im actually a permanent part time employee meaning I still get to have the leave entitlements and keep my position unless I decide to resign.

Hahaha malakas lang kami kumain :-P No its not because of formula. I breastfed my son until he reached 1 year old then formula just before going to bed so kahit mahal ang formula about $15 a tin di sya malaking portion ng grocery spending namin. kaya umaabot kami ng 200/week for grocery/food is because of nappies and other things related to my son like baby wipes and some baby food etc.

and also let me add that if you cook simple pinoy dishes it can get cheaper but since my husband is Aussie I dont cook pinoy food we eat a lot of good steak and its not really cheap so medyo malaki talaga budget ko for food and groceries.

As you may read sa ibang forum or thread, medyo mahirap work dito SA, for me, in not one of the lucky few here in SA na mabilis nakakuha ng work.

to give you an idea...i have 2 kids (panganay ko is 7, second ko is 2). our weekly forthnight with centrelink is $624. Since mura bahay dito sa SA, monthly rental namin is $280 per wk ($560 forthnight) so bale ung centrelink namin sa renta ng bahay napupunta, may sukli pa akong konti..hehe

husband ko nagwo-work ngaun sa factory dito. so bale ung sweldo nya nauuwi sa bills (electric, gas, water, mobile, internet) and food. wala pa kaming loan at mortgage sa ngaun. ung kotse kasi namin luma naman at ung pinambili galing sa dala namin baon. so far ok naman kami, nakakain namin gusto namin (pero di kami mahilig kumain sa labas), may konting shopping spree pa-minsan minsan at may nase-save pa ako :D Pero mas mabilis talaga kayong makakaipon kung 2 kayong magwo-work.

Since bored na bored ako sa bahay at wala rin naman akong makuhang work, i might take advantage of SA's skills for all, meron silang mga fee free course and I applied for a slot na. I'm still waiting na lang for the admission letter.

@ohmygag hmm tama po ba pagkaintindi ko.hindi din naman ganun kalaki ang diff sa maiipon kung mag part time vs full time work?kaya might as well part time lng para youll have quality time pa with your family?since nga mas malaki naman matanggap na benefits?

@kremitz we are getting family tax benefits for 2kids and rent assistance.

So depende sa sitwasyon mo, ako kasi gusto ko talagang mag-work, un nga lng,,wala naman akong makuha work so eto ako ngaun nagpapaka-nanay muna..:)

    @cheesy:

8weeks processing nung time namin.

@kremitz nung si nylram di naman daw sila hiningan although pag punta sa immunization center better if me record ka ng vaccine ng kid mo...nag visit ako sa pedia ng anak ko last weekend sabi sakin ang US at Australia daw di nila honor ang certification..better is to bring the baby book record where na ka lagay ang mga vaccine history ng kid/s.
