Kill-Joy words: "Local Experience"

beth_logginsbeth_loggins SingaporePosts: 64Member
edited February 2013 in Working in Australia
Hi Mga kabayan,

I was looking at websites like seek.com.au , jobstreet.com.au...etc
Most of the requiters keep mentioning "Local experience in Aussie"...

Is there any way for us to overcome that?
Alam nyo nman, new migrants do not have local experience....

:( Kinda disappointing lang poh...

Any tips and brain-dumps for such? :)

i really don't get this one as well, especially for those with international work experience already..

    it's catch 22..
    - we can't hire you, because you dont have local work experience
    - but who will hire me, so i can have a local experience?

according to articles i have read, here are some suggestions:
    - apply for volunteering, you can get local references from there
    - apply for entry level jobs, make this as a stepping-stone..
    - apply for what they call "odd jobs", or temp jobs, those that does not require specific skills
    - meet/make friends with locals or those who have been in AU for quite some time.. they may be able to refer you to some companies..

    Here is an interesting article:

    http://interviewiq.com.au/australianjobs

and i like the last statement:

Finally be patient. You’re not alone in your experience and taking it personally will impact your self confidence. And that’s a success killer in any job search.

I've heard a lot of stories about new migrants who went with odd jobs for as long as 13 years before they got a job that they are happy with now.

unfortunately talagang most companies would want local experience although meron naman magbibigay sayo ng chance kaya lang hahanapin mo talaga sila. try coldcalling, it works most of the time. or pwede naman mag Maccas muna or other temporary job kc mga employers din would always ask for references before they hire you and gusto nila na may local experience na so they can ask your current/prev employer questions like in terms of your communication skills, if you are able to do your job well, your work ethics etc.

eventually naman you'll get your desired job, talagang adjust lang sa simula.

We need to remember Australian companies exist to hire their locals...Kumbaga it's a given that they need to give priority to Australians in terms of employment (hence the requirement).

I have high respect for people who had to go through this difficult path but 13 years for me is just too much. Baka hindi sila masyado nag hahanap. Usual reason nyan ay naging busy or tinamad nang mag hanap, ika nga the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak.

Do not let a week pass without submitting at least 5 resumes while having your odd or entry level job. Pasasaan ba at darating din yan. Seek and you shall find.

If you are referring to this speech circulating around, then it is a hoax.

    @Pinoy_vegemite,
Thanks for the link hehe...it's a mixture of fact and hoax sabi sa site...Though if it were true, I don't mind the rigid requirement at all. Nakikitira tayo sa bansa nila so we need to abide by their standards (no matter how absurd it may seem)...It's a fair trade to achieve our dreams :)

Kung medyo unfair pakinggan yung requirement nila...well...we can always come back to the Philippines, diba? ;)

@LokiJr It's the hybrid version. lol!

Migrants must learn how to assimilate and Pinoys are good at that. Some people assimilate really fast as they do not see it as an option. Others take time as they see it as a choice.

Pwede mag aral ulit ng short courses sa TAFE if kinakailangan just to get local exposures. Pwede mag volunteer sa community. Widen your network as it helps a lot in terms of finding a job.

so maybe you can answer.. ni-require ba ng IELTS for TAFE enrollment ang hubby mo?
for those who want to study again, especially kung wala pang work na fulltime..

Has anyone noticed how many taxi drivers in the major cities like Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, are actually IT specialists, mostly from India, with various certifications and degrees of experience, yet these people cannot break into the IT market in Australia, not even in a entry level position? That is a shameful lot of talent going to waste
This reminds me of that nice young bloke who drove us from the airport to our accommodation on our first day here in Melb. When I told him I belong in the IT industry, his eyes lit up and said "me too!". He was even kind enough to write down names of companies for me, as we conversed in Hindi.

Pinoy po ako, hindi Pinay so wala akong hubby. lol! At single pa po ako. :)

Anyway, regarding your question, for as long as PR na, hindi na kailangan ang IELTS for TAFE enrollment. I did not personally experience this dahil hindi ako nag TAFE but I know of someone who took TAFE short courses related to his profession who eventually got a job in his field after.

Kahit hind related sa field mo, considered na rin yon na local experience. Although mas advantageous if related sa field mo kahit entry position lang.

We always imagine the most successful people to be in suits...pero huwag ka...sa Australia, a truck driver could earn as much as $150,000 a year.

The lesson we can take from this is, maybe we're some manager or AVP already in the Philippines and you're taking your chances in Australia. Who cares if you start out with a job not related to your specialty....That 'local job experience' might be your ticket to greater success in the future :)

I was depressed before kc for 7 months i couldnt find a job..not only because wla akong local experience pero dahil wala akong khit anong experience tlga kc fresh grad ako nung nag migrate ako sa au.. wala man lng tumwag o nag invite sakin for interview kahit nsa au na ako..

finally dumating din ang time ko and one local engineering company called me for an interview..hnd graduate engineer ung job pero inaaplyan ko..lahat ng klase ng work na pede inapplyan ko na! luckily ntanggap namn ako..first interview, first job ko rin..i was so happy!

after a month of working there, my boss told me im too good for my current position so he promoted me as a pavement engineer! sa wakas engineer na din!

anyway sobrang haba ng post ko, but the point is, u jst have to be patient..darating din ang time na para sau and its all gonna be worth it! :)
