Hello everyone!

Learning the Referencing and Citation Styles is a topic close to my heart, because in my experience, this is the most challenging part of studying abroad.

Six years ago, I consider reading and endless writing a nightmare. I guess I was very lucky during my first term, because the program director at University of Western Sydney ( now called Western Sydney University) recommended the service of a professional/academic writer, which is free for the international students. Through that person, I became more familiar with writing the 'Australian' way.

This thread are for those who want to have an idea , or simply review the proper way to acknowledge books, authors, journals, and all possible references we will use in our essay, reports and all writing requirements in the academe.

In addition to becoming familiar with the writing structure, I hope this thread will help you guys to be informed about PLAGIARISM.

In essence, If we fail our class, it defeats the purpose of having a student visa. Moreover, education is expensive in Australia. Thus, we must strive to excel or at the minimum, pass all the school requirements.

Learning the Referencing and Citation Styles

1. PLAGIARISM
Borrowing terms, phrases or exact words from books without proper citation could be grounds for academic dishonesty, which for us International students could mean suspension,etc.

As defined from the writing centre, Adelaide University:
What is plagiarism?
Plagiarism is a concept that is important in referencing within academic writing. At the University of Adelaide it has been defined as “presenting work that is not your own in any format, without appropriate attribution or reference to the original source” (University of Adelaide 2010, § 2.1 a i).Sometimes this is done deliberately where the student intentionally copies another’s work without acknowledgement. This is called academic dishonesty.

2. CITATION STYLES
In addition, please consider a possibility of being required to use different citation styles per class. This is because, we must follow what is the preference of our professors.

These being:
APA 6th - Developed by the American Psychological Association, this style is one of the most popular referencing formats using the author-date system.
Harvard -The Harvard referencing style is another popular style that employs the author-date system for in-text citations
Harvard-Flinders -A variation on the Harvard Style created by Flinders University
Harvard 3 - A variation of the Harvard style.
Vancouver -A numbered referencing style popular within the physical sciences and medicine.
Chicago 16th A - This is a footnote and bibliography referencing system.
MLA -MLA is a paranthetical referencing style popular in the Humanities.
AGLC - AGLC is a legal referencing style

5. SOFTWARE OR REFERENCE MANAGER
1. I came across online writing help (http://www.chegg.com/writing-help/)which looks good. But, I haven't tried this yet.
2. Some of my peers use EndNote (http://endnote.com/), the free version is EndNote Basic.
3.Microsoft Word Reference Tab http://proofreading.org/citation-shortcuts is also good,simple and free. Personally, I used this for my pre-thesis at DLSU-D.

ang hirap makahanap ng accommodation. yung gusto ko na may bakante,July 17 move in date. kaso naman june 24 start ng class ko.

babalikan ko din ang mga ito for my july intake. Pero siguro hindi masyadong hardcore this time,unlike my Uni days at UWS and Sydney Uni--communications kase field ko. New school naman focused on hospitality.

Very informative! Thanks @KrisQ you're awesome! Matagal ko na iniisip pano ba yung referencing na yan. I heard madami nahihirapan dyan kasi wala namang ganyan dito sa Pinas or maybe sa course ko lang [Nursing]. I can't remember doing any essay at all hehe

@MsSenoJR thank you!we need create awareness for those who plan to study down under.madali naman yan,basta aaralin mo sa simula kung paano ba gawin.wala kayang nagturo sa akin. Research lang talaga dapat.at dahil boring na topic ito,dapat may video para mas madaling unawain.
