New Citizenship Rules

Australian Citizenship to test values: Malcolm Turnbull and Peter Dutton address Citizenship Test changes.

Story: https://yhoo.it/2pDjYW4

Question:

So now because of this, those who are on other visa subclasses besides PR have to wait another four years from the moment they have been granted PR before they can apply for citizenship? Or have they just implemented new changes in the Citizenship Test?

My usual understanding was an applicant needs to reside at least four years prior to application including at least a year as PR.

With all these different news sites and comments on social media, I am confused as to who will be affected by these new citizenship mandates. Plus the fact that I have this pregnancy brain makes things more difficult to comprehend haha!

Discussions are welcome. Salamat!

    http://www.abc.net.au/news/2017-04-20/migrants-to-face-tougher-tests-for-australian-citizenship/8456392

Migrants will face a tougher citizenship test which will assess their commitment to Australia and their attitudes to religious freedom and gender equality.

Those with a history of family violence or organised crime could also be barred from citizenship.

Applicants will be asked to demonstrate that they have integrated into Australian society, for example by joining clubs or by providing evidence that they are employed and their children are in school.

    Turnbull echoes Trump's rhetoric

"Putting Australia first" — change a few letters and these words by Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull could have been uttered by US President Donald Trump, Stephanie Anderson writes.

A more stringent English language test will also be introduced, which will include "reading, writing and listening" components.

Migrants who become permanent residents will also have to wait four years before they can apply for citizenship — instead of the at least one-year wait at the moment.

If an applicant fails the test three times they will have to wait another two years before they can sit it again.

Does this mean we have to retake IELTS? :-?

The Government is planning to introduce these new changes into the Parliament by the end of 2017. However, all proposed changes that pass in the Parliament will apply to all Citizenship applications received on or after 20 April 2017.

Therefore, we cannot pre-assess how these new proposed changes might affect your Citizenship application or eligibility to apply for Australian Citizenship

We recommend you read more about these proposed changes and how to submit your views on them from our website here: http://www.border.gov.au/ReportsandPublications/Documents/discussion-papers/citizenship-paper.pdf

Further information on different aspects of the reforms to Australian Citizenship and their impact will be published on our website at http://www.border.gov.au in due course.

Just wondering what does it mean for those aspiring applicants for the citizenship... and is currently eligible to apply (already stayed in AU for more than 4yrs and im on my RRV at the moment)... is it still good to lodge the application or its a risk coz the cost for the application is like $200 plus and at the moment youre at awe of which process are you into... if they are requiring for a separate English test does it mean that i need to take that english test first which also refers to a separate fee prior application like what all the PR applicants did on their visa application?

@adelle_82 Nag apply kami recently, 1 day after our 4th year anniv as PR. Online application, medyo mahaba ang form at tsaka 3 kasi kami in the family. Tinanggap naman online application. Submitted na and just waiting for updates I reckon, kung di papasa sa Senate and proposed new changes, our application will be assessed under the old rules. Pero, i think matatagalan kasi around 81K applications are now pending sa DIBP since Apr 20. Kung under new rules,

Good news for everyone, the new citizenship laws were scrapped by the Senate. Those who are qualified to apply now, lodge your applications asap before the government will try again to propose similar changes

Hello PinoyAU folks - Eligible na kami ni partner mag apply for AU Citizenship this month. We were looking at the requirements, and sa unang requirement pa lang, medyo alanganin na, UNLESS mali pagkakaintindi ko. Which is why I'm seeking your advise and comments.

    Ito po ang requirement:

•Three documents that all together show your:
    ◦photograph and signature
    ◦current residential address
◦birth name, date of birth and gender.

My understanding is that this means one of 2 things:

    1. 3 IDs that show ALL the details required per ID.
    2. 3 IDs that show AT LEAST 1 of the details required per ID.

If #1, anong klaseng ID po kaya yun? My NSW Driver's Licence does not show my gender, so hindi na pwede yun. Also, wala na akong alam na ID na available that shows all of those requirements.

If #2, other than Driver's Licence and Passport, ano pa pong ID ang acceptable? Pwede po ba yung RSA card or yung NSW photo ID lang?

    Thanks sa mga sasagot po!
