Posting this topic because we all know that Aussie accent can be very difficult to understand plus they have their own set of slang which we are not really familiar with...

For those who have been living down under for quite some time, please kindly share your experiences in mis/understanding the Aussie slang or their way of expressing themselves.

Pwede praktis ng way of speaking/writing nila dito? :) iimaginine ko na lang yung accent. hehehe

    agree, sa work ko puro Aussies, ako lang noypi. Yung iba tipong probinsya ang accent kaya talaga dugo ilong ko pati tenga pero pag nasanay ka na "your da bomb mate". Ang Z nila "zed" ang H ay "heych" and A ay "Ay" O.o Mababait mga kasama ko they are teaching me the slangs.
    One of the "bastos" na slangs "Do 'ya like pork/shag that much?" meaning "Do 'ya like sex that much?". Madami pang iba. Cheers guys. Sorry po for sensitive content.

    Breakfast = brekky
    Baby = bubba
    Guy-friend = fella or "mayt"
    Cup of coffee, tea, drink = cuppa (pag sinabi, "I'm gonna get a cuppa", ibig sabihin they're taking tea break
    Knock off = uwian na
    Reckon = equivalent to "I think"
    Zed = letter "Z"
    Yada yada = blah, blah, blah

    Tsaka, mahilig din sila sa "sweetheart" ang tawag pag girl ka. Tulad nung barista where I buy my coffee regularly, it's always, "here you go, sweetheart". Pero wala sa kanila yun....

    Marami pa slangs, di ko maintindihan ang iba minsan. Hehe

    P.S. @nfronda = it's thongs talaga. Like thong slippers or thong underthings. :D

    I think its important to point out that there's a difference between getting familiar with the Aussie language and actually using it yourself. You can easily google the most common aussie slangs so when your talking to aussies you can easily understand them. But, you dont necessarily have to adapt to using the language. Ive been in oz for 4 years before I arrived here I tried to learn the language by reading the forum threads a lot of the people actually suggested to say the letter H as heyts and Z as zed etc but i was surprised when I got here and started working, not all aussies actually say those slangs and common aussie words. Where I live they dont say Heyts and Zed they just say them as H and Z (zee) like we do in pinas.

    So yeah its okay na aralin mo ang aussie language but dont feel pressured na kelangan magsalita ka like an aussie specially if you work with a multicultural crowd its best to be comfortable and being yourself when talking and communicating.

    i had difficulty adjusting at first. i was a trainer at Speechpower in Manila for a while and i was teaching students to pronounce correctly pero American English yun e. so when i came here, it was difficult to get used to dropping the "r" etc. that's actually what makes us recognise other pinoys here when they speak in English.

    because english is not our first language, kahit pa sanay tayo sa english back home, minsan you'd be at a loss for words when conversing with locals. just a tip, learn to think in english. practice lang, start with simple thoughts, habang naglalakad ka say it to your mind what you see. and then practice at home. my kids and their friends, and at times we at home, we talk in english. it helps.

    pansin ko lang, pag kausap mo locals with aussie accent, nadadala ka. pero subukan mo kumausap ng indian o ibang lahi, nawawala ka pati grammar mo nakakalimutan mo :))
