Tips for Reading which I have learned lately and it is effective:
    1. Read the first and last sentences of a paragraph to look for a stronger claim
    2. Prioritise first the easy-to-spot keywords like name, year, date, terms
    3. Take note of the word quantifier like little, only, some, all,
    4. for Not Given, an idea that would fall in a category mentioned but not stated in the text
    example:

in the passage it says- Mechanical aids are used to count objects like for pebbles
question: To count pebbles fingers are used as a mechanical aid.
    challenge: false or not given?
answer: not given (why?) refer to no. 4 explanation :)
    5. Take note of words that are synonyms or antonyms
    example:
    similar-resemblance (synonym)
    little -enormous (antonym)

I hope this makes sense :)

Please help me comment on this. I think I need to reduce the number of words which is challenging for me.

    Essay Writing Task 2

Universities should accept equal number of male and female students in every subject.
To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Although it is a ground breaking news for women that they have the right to be equal with men in education and career opportunities vice versa, I do not think so that universities, in this case, have to implement equal number of admission in every subject for male and female students. Simply speaking, both genders have their own preferences as to what they like to do and study about and what they do not like.

Firstly, both genders mean they possess own unique personalities and different aptitudes of what they can do and of what they cannot do or what they are not comfortable to do should I say. Universities have to understand that the courses they offer have something to do with passion and abilities of every male and female student. Equality for both genders does not mean to be equal in figure of male and female students enrolled in a course or subject or else by means of imposing this to women having the thought of “education equality” with men is not education equality at all vice versa. A timid male student who has stage fright and phobia speaking to a large group of different intellectuals of audience cannot be forced to take a teaching profession or something to do with public speaking careers while a slow-moving female student cannot be unwillingly admitted to a military school or maritime courses just to fulfill the idea of equality in numbers.

On my second note, regardless of what subject a male and a female take in universities, it must be of their favorable advantage because after all to be educated means being empowered by our own individual endeavor of interest. To be empowered in any means has nothing to do with satisfying any rule or policy because humans yet alike in nature are so different in many ways. What is anyway the purpose of having both genders get to access full and equal education? It is not about the policy or rule in number of male and female enrollees in every subject; however, it is to make them a person with worth and value in the crafts they have chosen believing that they are capable of making useful contributions in the society, in their families and in their own lives.

In conclusion, universities have to greatly consider the students’ field of interest and what they think they are skilled of whether male or female rather than looking at the idea of equal number of both genders that have to be accepted in every subject. (423 words)

    Hello! :)

Did you write this under time pressure? Congrats!

I read in an IELTS practice book that rhetorical questions should be avoided though. But the points you raised are really good.

Wish you well on your exam! :)

Hi guys... I have to confess that I get dizzy when I look at writing task 1. I get worried how to attack the chart. Even more dizzy when the charts are complicated and have a lot of information like numbers.

Any tips? Any thing to focus more?

    Hi guys,

Who will be sitting the exam on Dec 21 (IDP) in Makati? I apparently got the last slot for that sched earlier today. Buti na lang inagahan ko nang kaunti ang pagpunta kanina.

For the writing topics that ask, "Do you agree or disagree?", is it okay to use the first person in my essay? I've done some back reading and I've seen some people who advise against using "I", but the question does ask me directly for my opinion.

@appledeuce hi, sa 14 na ako. Do u have a long time practise and review?

To answer your question, yes. Coz its asking your viewpoint whether you agree or disagree.

Maybe this helps you. What have I been doing is I searched for sample of essays task 2 with band 8 score then I dowlnloaded them and I read anf studied them more on how the question is attacked if the question is about agree or disagree, discuss, opinion, to what extent, etc so at least I'd know how to attack the question in case it would come out in my exam. Same with task 1, I searched samples of graph interpretation with different charts from simple to complex.

    Hope this helps.

@filipinacpa how did you do your writing task 1 when you first time took the exam? Had you have a thorough practise? How did you do it? Coz seriously, I feel crazy how to determine the percentage increase and decrease even when the graph doesnt show.

    Hi R__yell--

Perhaps a good way to start would be to focus on the highlights of the graph or chart such as the peak, slack, plateau and offer to describe by using the variable indicators in your opening statements. That way, you build the ideas systematically and logically before attempting at the concluding part any conclusion.

    Hope it helps!;)

    Hi @appledeuce --

Am not sitting anymore but if i were to answer the question you posed, I'd say yes you may use the first person pronoun in your essay response.

The rule avoiding first person pronoun applies strictly on academic writing. Thus, third person is most desirable in that context.

Goodluck to you and everyone else for the results next week. I bet some will be so excited they'll check as early as 5 am ( Manila time )..;))

I think what Kindred is saying is, pwede gamitin 'yung "I" for the agree-disagree question sa writing ng General Module. Pero sa writing ng Academic Module, the use of "I" should be avoided. :)

@appledeuce -- yes. If the question stem specifically called for your opinion i.e. whether you agree or otherwise first person is acceptable.. ' that ' context refers to academic writing as in a research writing which prefers a third person point of view.

Good luck to all waiting for the results!
