    Mahirap po talaga makahanap ng work thru the normal job sites kasi gawain yan ng lahat. In addition sa job search websites, mag research po ng konti kung anong companies that would need your skills and to try to contact directly the HR of those companies which you can connect to using linkedin.

    From experience ko, zero probability ko to get a job listed sa job sites. I was able to get a job by submitting my CV directly to the companies that I think needed me and thank you Lord that they did really need me.

    @staycool and @pmzinoz

    C++ developer po ako and C++ developer pa rin po ako now. I started out in telecom industry sa pinas then got a job in SG with a bank, then dahil sa market downturn nakalipat sa casino industry where iyun software nila do interfacing with hardware so kelangan C++ dun. Hirap nga po maghanap ng C++ jobs kasi easy to learn siya but difficult to be expert in but this is a technology issue. I initially tried jobhunting sites and got nowhere with that. Then I checked out my CV kung anong industry ako pwede so telecom, banking at casino. I searched google first what companies are in Sydney in those domains. I initially tried melbourne but when I failed a phone interview, I decided to focus on Sydney at may relatives rin dito. I then sent my cover letter and CV directly sa mga websites nila sa careers section. I got rejection letters but at least rejection letters from HR not from recruiters. You have a name to contact na if ever gusto mo balikan iyun company na yun.

    I also started joining linkedin groups related to those domains. Pag may nag post opening sa linkedin groups na yun, I check kung headhunter siya o HR of the company. Pag HR siya of the company I connect with them first and send them a linkedin message afterwards just a short message asking if there are available jobs and why I would like to work for them. I try to be as nice as possible in that message. Talks start from there or it goes nowhere. Once kilala ka na and they have confidence that you are not a fake person with fake work credentials then job talks start. I was able to get skype interviews from Singapore once I had the blessing of the HR. Medyo mabagal mag ka job offer mga big companies because the first big company that contacted me, contacted me in april 2013 and possibly ngayon lang ako magkakaron ng job offer sa kanila in October 2013. In the meantime, I got the first job offer I could get after searching online for 2 months in Singapore.

    So in short I used google then social media (i.e. linkedin mostly, facebook secondary) to find the HR of the companies. Then try to contact them directly by calling or sending an introductory email. Ang maganda pa with social media is you get to see how people are connected in the industry you are working for. Word gets around here so babala lang sa iba na ingat kayo na no matter how difficult your boss is wag na wag mo dapat sila makaka-away. Sira na job profile mo for 2 years if ever that happens to you as shared by a relative.

    I think the Cold call from http://www.wikihow.com/Get-a-Job is a good summary of what I did. It does not have to be a call. It can be email but the most important thing is the HR of the company needs to return your call or reply to your email else move on. Last resort na iyun visit kasi puro email at phone calls lang ginawa ko.

    Part 3 #4 Cold call. Locate a specific person who can help you (usually the human resources or hiring manager at a company or organization you're interested in). Call that person and ask if they are hiring, but do not become discouraged if they are not. Ask what kind of qualifications they look for or if they have apprentice or government-sponsored work programs. Ask if you can send your resume indicating what field you want to go into. Indicate whether you would accept a lesser job and work up.

    - Reflect after each phone call on what went well and what did not. Consider writing out some standard answers on your list of skills so you can speak fluently. You may need to get some additional training to break into your chosen field. None of this means you cannot get a good job, only that you need to become further prepared to do so.
    - Visit the company or business in person. There's a saying among employers: "People don't hire resumes; people hire people." Don't underestimate the value of personal relationships. Go to the company or business where you think you might want to work, bring your resume, and ask to speak to the Human Resources manager about job opportunities. If you make an excellent personal impression on the HR manager, you've done your job: s/he will have connected your face to a resume, and will have a much better idea of your natural intelligence, your persistence, and your likability. People don't always hire the person best suited for the job; people often hire the person they like the best.

    A simple introduction ... the purpose of your email .. and your qualifications .. together with a resume ... just remember to be polite :)

    normally if the company have a website they will include a [email protected] or [email protected] or the website is equipped with a data entry for your information if you wanted to work with them then thy will send a email alert :)

    hi guys. Gabby here. arrived in oz september lang this year. i'm also a mainframe programmer. was wondering if any of the newer migrants have actually had luck getting a job. 2 months na ako looking. medyo na-fufrustrate ako. madalas kasi wala man lang feedback. so no idea if i'm doing something wrong or they see something undesireable sa CV ko. medyo mahirap maging patient kasi wala naman ako idea kelan ako swertihin. anyway... appreciate some of your stories. nakaka-encourage knowing someone from my background has had some success. so post niyo naman kung may updates kayo

    Hello Gabi,

    San ka sa Australia? Sabay tayong dumating Sept 1st ako nag land sa Sydney. I got 3 job offers after 6 weeks. Naka ilang interview ka na? Ano ang skills mo? First you have to do is to make your CV noticed. Customize your CV accdg to the job description as they always say. Then once invited for interview they prefer someone who is outspoken and can express himself very well.

    i have a cousin in sydney i can live with for a while. do you think that would be a good idea?

    @tassburrfoot

    no need to apologize. i think un nga din talaga ung reality. i have other skills so may hope pa din. i have also been applying to BSA and test analyst.

    @JCsantos

    Three weeks nako dito wala pa ring work. Naka-dalawang interview ako pero no luck. Lately naghahanap ako sa net ng Avaya-related jobs dito sa Sydney pero ala akong makita. Pati data-entry jobs inaaplayan ko na rin. Suerte lang kasi di ko problema ang bahay at pagkain, pero may time na nahihiya na ako kasi wala pa akong trabaho.

    Lately sumaside-line ako sa packing, nagtatape lang at naglalagay ng stickers sa mga boxes.buti naisingit ako sa trabaho nung kakilala ko. Sayang kasi ang mga araw na lumilipas. At least may dumarating na pera kahit magkano lang.

    If you are an IE, wag ka mag SA kc halos walang job opportunities dun for IE....go to Sydney or Melbourne mas maraming mfng. May separate thread dto sa forum about IE jobs sa SA i-read mo ung thread na un para po makakuha k ng info. Although na mention ko dun sa thread na un na ung officemate ko na Iranian, may friend sya na IE ndi nakahanap ng work sa SA more than a yr dn daw nag stay ung friend nya sa SA kaya lumipat dto sa Melbourne ayun na hire nman agad sa 1 automotive mfng company dto.

    nako po! huhuhu. ironic din kasi iyong state sponsorship na open for IE is South Australia lang as of now. then halos wala pala job opportunity for IE doon. huhuhu.

    Sa SA nag migrate ung friend nya dahil sa state sponsorship din....pero un nga ndi nakahanap ng work dun, pero nagpaalam nman ng maayos kaya wala nman naging problema ung friend nya nung lumipat dto sa Melbourne. Bakit po di ka mag 189 para kahit saang state pwede ka mag work?
