Share some tips on IELTS

Hello guys, here is my 2nd attempt:

L - 8.0
S - 7.0
W - 7.0
R - 6.0

Failed again.

Well, mas bumaba pa reading ko from last time na 6.5 (S-7.5, W- 7.0, L-7.0, R- 6.5)

Why am I having so much difficulty with reading. Yung mga katabi ko 10-15 minutes before tpos na sila sa reading exam. I think they are just skimming the passages and not actually reading the whole. Ako kasi I read one paragraph then check all questions kung may sagot sa paragraph. Proceed to next paragraph, check all questions and so on and so forth.

Bakit sila mabilis matapos??

Also, what's your techniques sa matching info? What I do is read the one paragraph then choose the best answer from the choices. Next paragraph, choose and so on and so forth. I do it systematically (top-down). How about you guys?

@the_adventurer Ano po gamit nyo reviewer sa Reading? Marami ako Cambridge reviewer baka gusto nyo. Practice lang everyday at least 1 set of exam na ino-orasan nyo talaga ng 1hr. Dun kasi mag gauge kun kaya mo ng 1hr. Pag ang result ng mga practice test nyo is 7 na ang pinakamababa, it means you can meet na ang band 7 :-) Good luck!

@johnvangie, panalo ang reading mo hehe galing!! opo naubos ko na lahat ng GT sa cambridge kaya pati academic madami na din ako nasagutan. I also time it 1 hour. Sa GT mostly I got 30-34 correct answers. sa acad usually 28-32. Need k pa talaga more practice. Meron ka pa po ba mga printable GT reading practice tests aside from cambridge?

@sonsi how about u po may printable GT reading practice tests pa po ba kayo aside from cambridge?

@the_adventurer cambridge so far ang meron at inulit ulit ko din yan noon. ginawa di ko tinatandaan mga sagot. ah yung sa road to ielts ng british council may tig 2 dun acad at GT. siguro alongside mag practice ka rin ng mga vocabularies at grammar kung talagang naubusan ka na ng materials. still trying to upload additional review materials sa dropbox ko pero puno kasi storage ko ngayon. do u have dropbox?

@sonsi oh thanks yup may CD ako nung road to ielts pero i'm thinking how to print them, mas gusto ko sana mag-practice sa paper para na-underline-an ko. I'll try to copy paste sa word doc. No I don't have a dropbox but I'll create one now and send you right away. sige grammar and vocab. I'm also trying to practice paraphrasing kasi puro paraphrased talaga sa reading. Also I'm trying speed reading.

@brspace, nahirapan din ako dun sa sports sa writing. I thought mga 6.0 lang ako kasi kung anu-ano lang pinagsusulat ko haha, but I noticed I made my words simple and may cohesion. Each para has a topic sentence then develop the topic sentence by giving examples. then each sentence dapat connected sa last. Tuloy2 ang flow. Do not digress! Luckily I got 7.0 hehe. But still so sad with my reading.

@the_adventurer I assess mo muna kun kaya mo na 2nd take. Kasi sa mga practice test dapat at least band 7.0 na ang nakukuha mo. Sayang ang 9K at time hehehe. Exert effort lang kayang kaya yan! Good luck!

I took the IELTS last April 12. That was the 4th time that i took it in my life. I need 7 in all bands and sadly nung last year 6.0 lang yung writing ko which is the only time na meron ako less that 7.0 sa mga bands. Nakakatamad kase mg practice ng writing. Ngayong last di pa rin ako confident sa writing ko kaya ng pa schedule ulit ng IELTS sa May 10 kahit wala pa result. This time mg papractice na talaga ako.

My favorite is reading which is why I wonder bakit nahihirapan yung iba. I got 9.0, 8.5 and 9.0 sa reading. I think there are two kinds of IELTS takers. Those who excel in reading and listening tulad ko and those who excel in writing and speaking tulad ng iba. When I take the IELTS sa reading, always mga 30-40 minutes I am done na and that included checking and re checking. Here are some tips on reading:

1. Do not read the article first. There are articles na hindi ko binasa all throughout and I am able to answer the questions. I only read the title to get an idea then diretso questions.

2. READ the questions and directions. Like look how many words are needed and usually if you have to get it directly from the article. Do not put words which are not in the article. Like kung kelangan 1 word lang yun that will be easy kase exact yun dun sa phrase na missing sya. Also remember, when filling up, kahit phrases lang yun kelangan check pa din grammar. When the grammar is off, it means that is not the answer.

3. T/F/NG? True if what is written in the question is stated in the article. False if it CONTRADICTS what is stated in the article. If wala sa dalawa, don't think. Not Given yun.

4. Paragraph headings. I think eto mejo mahirap because you have to read and understand the paragraph. What I do here is test taking strategies. Yung mga sure ko is cross out ko na. Like if A is for par. 2 cross out ko na yun. So less choices and pili na lang sa natira. Pero dapat talaga you have to understand the paragraph.

5. If it's too hard for you, leave it. Balikan mo na lang. Go to the next article or questions. All of them naman is equally 1 point each.

Ok wala na ako maisip. Hope this helps you guys. And nothing beats reviewing and practicing. I learned that the hard way.

@the_adventurer i think, dapat wag mo basahin buong passage.... hanapin mo lang keywords then skim, you dont need to understand the whole passage but find the correct words/answer nothing else.... time is our greatest foe here......

@the_adventurer or bago ka start magbasa, basahin muna ung questions then underline impt keyword sa tanong.. kasi normally ung nasa passage mga synonyms ung terms para atleast me idea na alin ang hahanapin

@yotsuba - actually, target ko is 8 for each part. yan kasi advice sakin ng agent ko. pero pinaevaluate ko pa sa kanila kung pwede na un. well, sana pwede na un para di na ko magretake. hehe btw, sa KL ako nagtake, sa MY kasi ako nagwwork.

tanong ko lang po..pwede bang iparemark ang speaking?
Ang result kasi ng ielts ni hubby, kinulang ng .5 sa speaking e..

L -7.5
R- 7.5
W - 7.0
S- 6.5

Sobrang nakakapanghinayang yung .5..
haay..which is better ba?..retake na lang or iparemark yan?
Gaano ba kataas ang chance na mabago score niya sa speaking pag pinaremark yan?

@brspace yup sa BC KL, onga sayang di tayo nagkita. Mag-exam ulit ako sa 10 and 17 (probably my last exams, otherwise I have to accept the fact that I am not meant for Australia. drama hehe). Just let me know kung mag-exam ka din sa sked na yan.

I am learning a lot from your tips. I think di ko talaga need maintindihan buong passage. Ginagawa ko kasi I understand each and every sentence 'intensively' para masagutan ko effectively ang questions. But by doing so, I am wasting a lot of precious time. You are correct yotsuba, i should underline important keywords first and immediately think of synonyms para yun ang hahanapin ko sa passage. Just skim through the paragraph and look for the synonyms (reading with purpose)

Ok so madaling sabihin, mahirap naman gawin hehehe.

@iamyourangel08 yup pwedeng pa remark ang speaking, subjective kc yan. If u r confident you can go for remarking. same tayo sablay sa speaking and im waiting sa results sa remarking. hoping positive ung results.

@frederique ..oo nga e..kainis yung .5...kelan ka nagparemark?..
hindi pala pwede basta basta magparemark..need muna intayin ang hard copy ng result bago magpunta sa idp para magparemark..
kelan ka nagparemark?..
sayang lang din kasi yung oras..kasi hindi kami makapag submit para sa SS kasi kelangan namen ng points sa ielts..
sana maging ok ang remarking result naten..

@iamyourangel08 oo need ang orig copy sa results bago mgparemark. ngparemark ako kaagad when i claimed my results, March 31. 3rd week palang. 5 weeks to go ang waiting. haha

praying na maging ok pra na dn mka pag move on sa next step. show stopper dn tong ielts eh.
