Statutory Declaration for Tourist Visa

Hi!! I know this might be an aged old question but I'd like to know - is a notarized Statutory Declaration really required in a Visa 600 application? Or would a regular invitation letter suffice? I've been confused. I read one thing and another. It's my first time to apply. Thanks to anyone who'd answer.
