I am planning to move to Melbourne next yr. I opened this thread so that we can share our plans/preparations prior to the move. Those who are already in Melbourne naman hopefully can share their experiences arriving/living/working there so we can have insights kahit papaano in Melbourne Living..

Melbourne is an expensive city. Bring sufficient money, I say at least $12,000AUD. Based from my experience, we spent almost 10K nung wala kami pareho work ng wife ko for 3months. Tumira kami sa CBD (across Flinders st) para kahit rush yung schedule ng interview we can go immediately. Mahirap kasi magpalagpas ng opportunity.

To give you a rough estimate we spent on the FIRST month alone:
1,310/month sa studio unit + 1,310 for bond payment (in Pinas we call it as deposit para kung may masira sa unit dito nila ibabawas, if wala problem ibabalik nila at the end of lease) and mga $180/week for food, utilities, etc.

Total = 3.3K on the first month alone (nakakaiyak talaga, lalo na pag sa savings binabawas kasi wala pang work).

Succeeding months total expenses = 2K.

I highly suggest na kung meron kayo kakilala, tumira muna kayo sa kanila. Kami kasi we risk it all before pumunta dito. We underestimated this city kaya hindi namin naanticipate yung buhos ng gastos. We both resigned from our work when we we came here kahit na alam namin wala kami matitirhan kamag anak.

Sa mga nagplaplan pumunta dito, may mga kakilala ako nag initial entry muna and then nakahanap din ng work nung pagbalik. Yung iba risk taker, eventually nakakuha din ng work after.

May mga nabasa ako forum posts from other nationalities experiencing hardships as well here in Australia. They said that "this country has a unique way of humbling its people" which I find so accurately described.

@Hellfire Thank you! Sobrang helpful ng shinare nyo... at least mi idea kami kung ano iexpect pagdating jan. I was thinking enough na cguro 10k AUD for single migrant pero sa sinabi nyo at sa mga nababasa ko din better talaga higher than that. More ipon pa

sana makahanap din ng part time work para makatulong sa bayarin..

Concern ko din ang jobhunt since madami na nagma migrate so dami din kumpetensya, pero I think kakayanin basta matibay ang loob lol

Pero mghahanap muna kmi ng work offshore.. kse wala kaming kamag-anak or friends jan.. mahirap sumugal.. kung hindi makahanap ng work.. baka ako lang muna ang pumunta.. mahirap kse na pareho kami ni hubby na walang work..

Plan din sana namin magsydney para makita and macompare sya sa melby pero inisip din namin may big move pa next year na mas need iprepare kaya tipid pa more muna kami hehehe.

Konting tip saka short kwento sa experience ko...

Kung family kayo, better na mauna muna ang isang spouse until makahanap ng work saka sumunod ang rest of the family. May mga kakilala kase ko na nahirapan makakuha ng work, took them 5-6 months... Sa accommodation nman, madaming resident pinoy na nagpapa share ng accommodation. Di naman kailangan sa city ka mismo nakatira kase mahal talaga rent duon. Dumating ako dito late 2010, as in walang kakilala. May nagrefer lang sa akin sa isang pinoy na naghahanap daw ng housemate. Sige naman ako, lakasan lang ng loob. Nagbigay ng down payment through western union (syempre di ka naman patutuluyin ng di ka nagbabayad muna lalo na strangers talaga kayo sa isat-isa) I arrived here na hindi sigurado kung may dadatnan ba ako sa address na pupuntahan ko hahaha (pero syempre I googled yung address to check whether it exists)! Turned out mabait naman yung naghahanap ng ka share. The place was only less than 5kms away from cbd, 15 mins train to city. I was asked $600 monthly rent then (including water but not power) for a reasonably sized furnished bedroom, including access to basic household needs like washing machine, kitchen utensils/fridge, saka gamit ng tv. Ni-brief pa ko pano ang public transport at sinamahan pa ko mag-open ng bank account. Saka magrequest ng tfn (tax file number). By the way, yan ang mga pinakuna nyong gagawin, TFN and open a bank account para makasahod agad sa first job... So yun nga, swerte ko din... Yung price ng rent sa ngayon eh di naman ganun kalaki ang inflation. Kung nakakuha ako $600 shared accommodation dati, siguro makakakuha kayo ng $650-700 for the same things I was entitled to. Pero that comes with a bit of luck too, na mabait ang unang makakatagpo nyo dito

To anyone na sa Melb na, mi ma suggest po ba kayong ideal place or area na pag stayhan?yung tipong di sobrang layo or hassle mag commute sa CBD?

Sa mga naka-experience pong mghanap ng work sa Melby.. okay ba ang job market ng bandang October to December? Or mejo matamlay ang job market nyan?

Balak kse ng hubby ko kung ma-approve visa namin this July.. maga-apply muna kami online for 2 months.. until end of Sept.. kung wala pa ding offer, ako daw muna ang mauna sa October para humanap ng work para masuportahan nia ako financially doon.. mahirap kse na pareho kaming walang work..

Sa tingin nio okay lang yung timing ng punta or after na lang ng Australia Day kse dun daw masigla ang job market..

@raspberry0707 di ko sure kung anung season dami job postings dito sa Melbourne ha, pero may mga kakilala ako na dumating ng november, the following year na nakakuha ng job. Most of the companies kase dito nagshushutdown ng 2 weeks pagka december for the holidays. So holiday mood din ang mga workers mga naka leave ng december tas yung iba mid january ma bumabalik. That could be one of the reasons why the job market ramps up only after Australia day which is Jan 26.

Mga 6 days sa melb sis tas 4 days sa syd..may friend kasi ako sa dun so nag offer sya mag stay sa kanila, ginrab ko na hehe... baka mas ok din dec mas festive ang mood

@johnvangie ayan na excite na naman ako haha! honga po sa kakabasa and research ko about melbourne nagustuhan ko na sya! Mas bet ko yung vibe nya kesa sa sydney, laidback din kasi prefer ko. Naku sana lng talaga maka work ako agad next yr! medyo kabado pa kasi nga slowdown economy ng AU ngayon.

Buti nka settle na po kayo jan and naka adjust na. Galing din ba kayo SG?

Nope, Pinas kami galing.
Yup laidback dito, super like talaga namin ni hubby ang family life dito.
Ang major disadvantage lang, un lamig, mas malamig daw dito kesa sa Sydney sabi ng iba.

Thru God's grace and blessings, ok na, naka settle na.
Exactly 2months si hubby dito un 1st day of work nya :-)

Wag kayo matakot, di tayo pabayaan ni Lord.
Kahit si hubby pa lang ang working, nakaka rent sa 4 bedroom house and nakaka-save.
Di yan sa pagyayabang, para lang ma motivate kayo.

@johnvangie Thanks po! Gusto ko nga magbasa ng mga success stories ninyo jan kasi nakaka inspire, I don't see it as mayabang. Pinaghirapan nyo din kasi iyan at least nakikita namin may bunga naman.

Medyo may worry pa rin sa job hunting pero yun nga basta malakas fighting spirit at di naman masyado maarte sa paghahanap ng work, eh makakaya iyan! Madali naman tayo makaka adjust na mga pinoy. Madiskarte pa!
Ngayon nag iipon ako ng cert and enroll sa short courses para naman may edge pagdating jan.

Naku sayang plan din namin pumunta Tulip Festival pero sa Sept. 17 pa, yung Tesselaar ba yan? Pero baka saglit lng kmi dun, silip lng sa mga tulips lol.

Sana makasama din ako sa mga meetups nyo, go na go ako jan
