Tasmania State Sponsorship - opened its doors for overseas applicants w/o job offer via 489

Hi to all,

For overseas applicants who do not have a job offer in Tasmania, you may be eligible to get SS visa 489 if you meet their criteria in category 3A and your occupation must be on the Tasmanian Skilled Occupations list (TSOL)

Benefits of Tasmania SS:

- No SS fee in Tasmania
- Faster visa processing
- No occupation ceiling
- AT least 60 points is required. For ICT professionals, there is no minimum 70 points requirement unlike other states.


Category 3A – Overseas Applicant

To be considered for this category you must be living overseas and meet the following criteria:

nominated occupation is listed on the Tasmanian Skilled Occupations List (TSOL)
you, or any of your dependents have not lived in another Australian state or territory within the last twelve months

achieved at least ‘Proficient English’ in a recognised English language test or hold a passport of the UK, Ireland, the USA, Canada or New Zealand

researched the Tasmanian labour market and provide evidence (see Document Checklist) that there are sufficient employment opportunities (at least five and not more than eight opportunities) in your nominated occupation in Tasmania; and that you have:

skills and recent experience relevant to the researched employment opportunities
skills and experience relevant to the Tasmanian economy
access to sufficient financial assets to fund your migration and settlement in Tasmania while you seek employment

If your application is one of high calibre, and the Tasmanian Government is satisfied that you will be able to secure employment with ease due to your skills and previous work experience you may be invited to apply for the Subclass 190 - Skilled Nominated visa.

@Au_Vic Question....when you are approved to have Visa SC486, then move to that state to work/live. Can I process SC 189/190 already? or I should wait after 4 years before I have to process for it?

Also, may show money ba for Tas Immigration?

@rvrecabar visa SC486? or you meant 489?...If 489, once you visa is granted. you need to live and stay in that state for at least 2 years and work full time for at least one year then you can apply for PR (SC 886).

Visa 189/190 is for offshore applicants only. In your case since you are a holder of 489, you need to apply for 886 to convert your 489 to PR.

The website says sufficient financial assets to fund your migration and settlement in Tasmania while looking for a job. Most SS do not require the applicant to provide evidence of having money, usually it is by stat declaration or financial capacity confirmation

@Au_Vic Thanks and yes that was supposed to be SC489.....In addition, SC886 is equivalent to 189 or to 190? When you have Visa 886, you can work on other states or still on the state where you applied for that Visa?

what are the usual jobs in Tasmania? I'm a software engineer but if necessary I'm willing to apply for other jobs.

from skilled regional sponsored temporary (SC 489) to skilled regional sponsored permanent (SC 887) and not 886.

@sefzyr0531 thanks for your reply pero mahirap kasi yung list lang... yes, nasa TSOL ang nominated occupation ko pero pagdating pala dun pahirapan.

I read somewhere that most jobs available there are related to health care.

@jaceejoef Tasmania is a small state compared to others and yes, there will be challenges in getting a job but please note that for the last 3-5 years, getting a job for new migrants is challenging all over australia because so many skilled migrants are coming in and employers prefer to hire people with local experience.

I agree with @Au_Vic

But if you need accurate answer, I think ang makakasagot nito is those who are previously or currently residing into Tasmania. Antay tayo, hopefully someone can give their thoughts about that.

Alternatively, you can gather a few hints about those occupation if you check across some employment marketplace sites like seek.com.au, gumtree.com.au or careerone.com.au. By doing that, more or less you can have a rough idea about what particular job is currently employers are looking for.

If you really wanted to migrate and Tasmania is the only state offering an open door, i suggest to just grab the opportunity. We never know in the future, changes might limit your chances to migrate. Its a good opportunity that they offer 489 without a job offer. The 1 year work experience doesnt mean only job in your related field, any work will do. You have 4 years to do it anyway and you also have the option to renew if the havent met yet the requirements to apply for 887 PR visa.

@fgs I agreee with you, they should know what they really want kung magmigrate agad sa oz. Immigration rules have changed the past 5-10 years.

As long as the person is not picky/fussy when it comes to job then it should be ok but the challenge for new migrants (especially tayong mga pinoy dahil sa nakasanayan natin sa pinas na ung mindset na if you work in a casual, temp or non-office based job ay people will look at you in a different way but dito sa Australia casual, temporary jobs are very common. Yung mga skilled or trades worker mas malaki pa ang sahod sa mga office workers dito sa Austalia.

in the end, kanya2 ng decision yung iba kc ayaw i-grab agad ung opportunity.

Ask ko lang po, pag na.grant ba ung Visa 887 mo, obligated ka parin ba magstay sa state which granted your Visa 489? Or pede ka magtransfer to another state?

Mabilis lang naman two years tas counted naman work kahit hindi related sa nom. occu.
Tyaga lang talaga sa paghahanap ng work at hindi dapat fussy.

@spyware no conditions for visa 887 so pwede ka lumipat after the grant...my entry to Au is also 489 and a day after our 2 years, nagapply agad kami ng 887

We're actually eyeing now for visa 489 kc mababa lang points namin due to age and its actually faster makakuha ng ITA compared to 190, hindi nga lang PR.
BUT importante makapasok sa OZ, stepping stone kumbaga

@spyware yup tama. dapat bukas tayo sa lahat ng options para makarating sa Oz. need lang talaga ng sipag at tyaga sa paghahanap ng work. any legal work will do.

Remember binabaan ang maximum age from 50 to 45...so we never know baka baguhin ang points sa age brackets...kaya kung kulang ka sa points due to age mas mabuting magdecide ka na kung talagang gusto mo magmigrate

nagsubmit ako sa ibang states, pero may nabasa kasi ako na dapat "NO" ang sagot kasi may chance na di ma-approve ang application pag nalaman na nag apply sa ibang state.

Ask ko lang, kung naka visa 489, pede ba ung primary applicant ang mauna mag BM tas follow nalang ung dependents kapag settled na cya basta within IED lang?

Good thing with 489..may subsequent entrant, say dependent nyo iba nyong kapatid etc...pwede nyo applyan before 887...at pwede nyo na isama sa 887 when you apply

@fgs thanks for confirming. Kala ko kc may restriction w/ regards sa BM ( for dependents) dahil visa 489, hindi PR.

@fgs interested ako dyan sa dependent yung kapatid.. so meaning for example single applicant lang for now sa 489 visa then after a year e apply ko sila as dependent for my 489 tpos isasama ko sila sa 887 pag nag apply na ko? tama ba pagkaintindi ko? thank you.
