magandang topic to @thegreatiam15 I think applicable rin to for those Families who are living abroad. like for the case of our Daugther. hindi namin cya tinuruan mag tagalog. puro english lang. but slowly tinuturuan namin cya ng mga simple tagalog words. kasi nakakawa rin pag naguusap kame ni misis ng tagalog at hindi nya naiintindihan.

ung friend namin sa US, me rule sila na pag sa loob ng bahay Filipino-only lang ang usapan..I guess effective naman kasi nakakapag salita at intindi naman ang kids nya ng Filipino, although the kids find it funny daw pag nagsasalita sila kasi malabot at me "twang".. so nahihiya sila pag ibang Pinoy ang kausap.. haha.

My youngest was 4 when we moved here, Tagalog lang alam nya. After 1 week sa kinder, conversant na sya sa English - with matching Aussie accent pa. After a couple of years hirap na sya mag-Tagalog kahit na Tagalog ang usapan namin sa bahay.

I think this is inevitable, in most cases. I've seen lots of families -- in Singapore, Australia and US -- where the kids understand tagalog but can't, or have difficulty, speaking it. Even in my household, it's the same. My eldest can understand Tagalog, and at some point, tried speaking a bit of it but has had difficulty expressing herself or simply does not have the confidence, not to mention masagwa minsan ang pronunciation / delivery.

Siguro if gusto talaga ng mga magulang na matutong magtagalog ang kanilang mga anak -- read, write and speak -- then they may want to consider sending them for Tagalog lessons, or find time to actually teach them. Unfortunately, the latter is probably easier said than done for most parents (especially those working).
