    Changes to Skilled Occupations Lists Flagged for Mid 2018

    The Department of Jobs and Small Business has published a draft bulletin for public comment on proposed changes to the skilled occupations lists to take effect in mid 2018.

    Impact on General Skilled Migration Applicants
    Since April 2017, applicants who had occupations removed entirely from the skilled occupation lists prior to receiving an invitation to apply for a 489, 189, or 190, were no longer eligible to lodge an application for either of those visas. We expect this trend will continue in the next round of changes.
    Similarly, applicants who had occupations that were moved between MLTSSL and STSOL were also affected in that their options may have become limited or broadened depending on the new list. We expect this trend will continue in the next round also.

    It is also likely that applicants who received invitations to apply for a 489, 189, or 190 prior to the next round of changes but, haven't yet lodged their visa applications, will continue to remain eligible for the visa they have been invited to make an application for.

    Encouraging Self-Sufficiency for Newly Arrived Migrants - Extension (2018-19 Budget)

    In the 2018-19 Budget, the Government announced that the Newly Arrived Resident’s Waiting Period (NARWP) will be further extended from 1 July 2018. Pending the passage of legislation, the NARWP will be extended to four years for a number of welfare payments, including Newstart Allowance, Youth Allowance, Family Tax Benefit and the Paid Parental Leave Scheme.

    This measure will only apply to people granted permanent residency, and some temporary visas, on or after 1 July 2018.
    Migrants already granted permanent residency before 1 July 2018 will not be affected by this measure.

    Pool/Pass Mark rises from 60 to now 65 points for all 489, 189 and 190 visas lodged in response to an invitation given after 1st July 2018.

    In effect that means any EOIs at 60 points that have not received an invite by the 1st July will be of no use and will not get an invite .

    AUSTRALIAN CITIZENSHIP BILL IS BACK…WITH A VENGEANCE

    The Australian Citizenship Bill, otherwise know as The Australian Citizenship Legislation Amendment (Strengthening the Requirements for Australian Citizenship and Other Measures) 2017 is back in 2018.

    After being struck down in the Senate last year due to failing in meeting the deadline, the dreaded citizenship bill is scheduled back to the Senate’s agenda for its “spring sitting.”
