Hi @sohc and everyone in this thread.:) I just registered here in hopes of finding helpful info on job hunting here in au. I migrated last feb and m staying here at west hoxton with my aunt and her family. It's a 45min. travel by train to sydney. I came here with 176 skilled relative sponsored visa. Altho sponsored my visa has no conditions so I can work anywhere. I started looking for work by march, created public profiles in seek.com.au, careerone, mycareer, linkme, iprofile tool where most IT recruiters would access for prospect applicants. With iprofile, recruiters will be one to call you. Btw I used to work for Accenture Phils. as sr. software engr/analyst programmer and was assigned to vb.net/c#-sharepoint projects. I thought it would not take me long to find a job since m in IT. After 5 months of applying so far I only got 4 or 5 initial calls from recruiters and I have not made it yet to face to face interviews. I realized that as much as there are a lot of IT jobs all over major cities in au specially in Sydney they're also technology specific and they're looking for all the latest technologies which I don't have. Also my job before was more of application support/developer for .net. Here it was more of consulting jobs meaning end to end dev't. Good for @sohc since he's into systems/network engr./dba coz it's highly indemand anywhere here. .NET is indemand but you need to have the reqd skills set, exp in particular software and industry. Open source like java and php are highly indemand too but unlike .NET you need to have exp in the latest framework .net 4.0, mvc 3, html 5, ajax, jquery, wcf, wpf, SQL 2008, ssis, ssrs, ssas etc. One culprit why I have not been as lucky must be the format of my resume lolz and I know I really have to upgrade my skills. Right now m enrolled at UTS for the SQL for developers short course wc cost me 720 for just 15 hrs. once a weeknight course. It's actually 800 but I got 10% discount due to my ACS membership. Sorry this is too long already. I really want to get back to work already even if it's just temp. Thanks for reading.

Hi @Pau92,
I have a friend/old officemate who migrated in Melbourne from sg with his family via state sponsor. Processing just took him 9mos. He's into ETL. Also try to create a profile in seek.com.au ul find lots of IT jobs there and if ur lucky there are recruiters willing to take in applicants with sg permanent resident visa or willing to sponsor like those with TM1 cognos exp.

I know the feeling of migrants.I have experienced mopping the floor so that we can able to pay for our weekly rent.Indeed migrating is not for quitters. To pay it forward,I hope in the future I can help also those pinoy migrants here since my current job is into IT recruitment.Sometimes kasi in looking for a job may kasama ding luck. But nothing beats perseverance and patience plus prayers. If things aren't good as of the moment, just remember that it won't last long.Good luck and God bless to everyone=)

Dalawang bagay bakit nahihirapan makakuha ng trabaho ang isang Asian as of this writing, firstly, you are directly competing with Brits, Europeans and Americans not to include the Indians and Chinese na binabagsak nila ang presyo nila; secondly, adjustments.
Binasa ko ang buong thread dito medyo nagulat ako how things were described and explained but I won't get into details. May nabasa din naman ako na tamang suggestions like you need to understand ano ba ang culture dito when it comes to work. You need to research paano ba ang gumawa ng CV ala Aussie way.
1. You need draft an application letter. Content should emphasize the required skills as per PD (position description).
2. You need to change the format of your CV. See several samples marami kayong makukuha from internet kahit sa seek or mycareer or careerone meron yan. 4 components dapat meron kayo sa first page ng CV i.e. Career Summary; Career Achievements; Key Competencies; Education and Training. 2nd and 3rd page dapat nasulat nyo list of job positions, company worked for, key duties and roles and project involvement, if any. Wag masyadong makwento diretso sa punto.
Meaning: hiningi sa job ads excellent in using MS Project.. dapat masulat nyo yan either sa Key Competencies or anywhere sa CV. Pag sinabi na essential skills dapat lahat yun meron kayo kaya dapat yun ilalagay nyo sa CV nyo, pag sinabing desireable e sana meron kayo dahil mas mapipili ka.
4. You need to customise your CV based on what is required.
Wag kayo mawawalan ng pag-asa. For example, nasa Sydney ka wala kang makita sa Sydney but that doesn't mean hindi ka pwedeng humanap sa ibang region. You just need to check your visa. The reason why a Sydney guy or gal moves to Adelaide, Melbourne or Perth dahil wala silang nakuha sa unang state na pinuntahan nyoa which is Sydney.
Baguhin mo at icompare mo.
Have faith!

@TinaR, that was a very comprehensive post about CV's
Just on the topic regarding races, I think kahit matapos na ang recession sa Europe, hindi maiiwasan na marami pa rin ang lilipat sa Australia --it's part of globalization. So, for us aspiring to go there, huwag kayo mawalan ng pag-asa...we know our strengths so let's just highlight those...saka hindi lahat ng klase ng trabaho 'game' ang mga Westerners pasukan mga yun so we have our niche in the market hehe.
Besides the CV, I would suggest practicing the conversational skills...di kailangan ng accent, pero malaking bagay yun para mapansin ka ng employer...Come to think of it, yun lang naman talaga ang inherent advantage ng mga westerners sa atin, so if we can prove to them that we are just as good in speaking and writing (and the IELTS results will speak volumes about that)..then fair game na to
