Hi. What are the benefits newly arrived migrants enjoy (PR)?
I know that some benefits require waiting times.

this is for PR visa, you can get Medicare card as a health card and if you have family you will receive housing allowance from centrelink and its depend on how many kids you have but if you are single you can not received housing allowance. to make sure just enquire at centrelink office when you arrive. cheers

@totoyozresident Sir any other info regarding the housing allowance from centrelink? Kailangan ba when you arrive sa OZ kasama mo na family mo to be entitled to this benefit? Or pwede kahit susunod pa lang sila? Have a wife and 1 kid. Also, yun housing allowance ba is only if mag-rent kayo ng house? Or you can still avail of this even if nakikitira kayo sa relative or friend? Thanks sa mga inputs. =)

hi totoyozresident, nabalitaan ko sa friend ko na pag walang work ung wife mo. may allowance sa gov't? totoo ba ito? and kahit newly arrived migrant ba effective na agad to? or do they still need to have a specific number of yrs bago makaavail ng ganitong benefit from the gov?

@aolee If sa centrelink po yun tinatanong nyo nabasa ko na din yan before na meron waiting period for newstart allowance, 104 weeks po yata or a little over 2 years of residency.

@jayjee09 Yun centrelink po yata is parang SSS, Philhealth, and Pag-Ibig combined. They are the ones that assist Australians and Permanent Residents (including newly arrived PR holders). Here is their website if anyone is interested.

I see, ang galing nga ng Gov't nila. kahit walang work ang asawa nag bibigay ng allowance. hayz. biruin mo ang laki ng population nila pero still they are able to provide for their people. magiging ganito kaya ang pilipinas?

Medyo nalalabuan lang ako dun sa newly arrived assistance, bakit after 104 weeks (2 years+) mo pa pwede ma-avail. I'm sure for most of us, by that time medyo stable na tayo. But I've read somewhere, kaya din siguro capable ang Australian government to provide those benefits is malaki ang tax talaga sa Australia. Pero it's good to know din na napapakinabangan ng mga tao dun ang binabayad nila sa government nila. :D

But besides that, malaking tulong po talaga ang Centrelink nila...pag wala trabaho tutulungan ka pa nila maghanap ng trabaho :)

Ang possible po makuha ng mga bagong dating na migrants are Family Tax Benefit and Rent Assistance and Child tama po kayo. Sa couples, mukhang dapat pareho meron tax file number. Hinihingi pa ito samin ng Centrelink. Pati Rent Certificate form. :D Family tax benefit A & B mukhang makakakuha kami kasi hindi ako nagstart ng work Jun 2012 so pasado sa income test. Hehe.

Pero alam nyo if ma audit kayo at the end of the year then mataas na sweldo mu or may increase.. Bale not the same as the initial salary they can ask for you to pay those benefits back:)

Happened to someone i know kasi kahit ung base nya d nag increase pero dahil sa overtime and penal rates...in paper lumaki tax bracket nya so got a letter saying she needs to pay back the childcare allowance kasi d sya pasok sa income testing.

Halos lahat po ng useful centrelink benefits ay may 2 year waiting period...yung mga tipong Family Tax A & B...

As new migrants, in my opinion, we should think of ways of contributing to their government first (work, pay tax)...rather than feel entitled for benefit kaagad :) kaya tayo nababansagang palamunin ng ibang lahi kasi bago dayo pa lang benefit kaagad hinihngi hehe :)

    Hehe @icebreaker1928 @batman...

As much as the country does give benefits to migrants, it does not sit well with me na hihingi kaagad ako ng 'pera' o 'benefit' sa Australia...Serve and give back to the country muna...that's my personal mantra...We can also add a biblical context here if I can remember one hehe

But in truth it isnt that easy to ask for benefits specially for new migrants.. The assessment process is tough.

And then once you do not meet the criteria na like u get a job or you get a pay rise or work o.t. then 1. It stops. Or 2. You would be asked to pay it back.

Sometimes it becomes more bother than it is worth. Also if u are on benefit parang X yan when u get loan like you have to prove to the banks hindi ka risk to them and that kaya ng salary mu ung mortgage or car loan on ur income.

But benefits like childcare rebate..automatic naman u get that from the preschool/ daycare on p.r. Visa but ung mga rental or jobless allowance etc. may assessment process pa yan.

@batman I agree, it all boils down to perspective...Nasa tao rin kasi kung (1) gusto lang niya malaman yung mga benefits ng pagiging migrant; at (2) gusto niya malaman mga libreng puwedeng makuha sa Australia para sulit hehe - with the latter I dislike :P

But generally, all centrelink benefits are subject to (1) tenure of residence; (2) income test; and (3) asset test...You need to meet all three to get something from them :)
