    Hi,

Just wondering if anyone here was able to reside for a long time in Dubai before migrating to Oz? Half-hearted na kasi tumuloy sa Australia kasi di daw namin kikitain Yung pera na kinikita n nmin dto sa Dubai because of the tax. Aside from that, cost of living in any state in Oz is more expensive compared to Dubai. One good thing in Dubai are all-year round sales which I don't think Oz can offer. There's no citizenship in Dubai but you take home your salary to yourself.

How can you compare Dubai to Australia?

all year round sales? does it matter? i respectfully disagree.
    materialistic perception... ;)

Pero inaabangan ko nman yung mid year stocktake sale, boxing day sale, end of season sale.

tapos meron din lay by dito, so Dubai sales? nah.. im good here
One thing I have learn living here in Australia is to not be too materialistic... People are chill here unlike Singaporeans and Filipinos.

As long as what you have is decent - di sila masyado very particular sa tatak.
Wow that's good to know, parang dito rin sa Thailand ganyan, basta kahit nakasimpleng damit at naka-tsinelas lang ang tao basta maayos, they will not look down on you...

Kapag bago sapatos mo, cellphone or naka-kotse ka.. Big Time ka na LOL :P

    Balik tayo sa Dubai topic.

Culture wise parang ang laki ng gap if you are coming from Philippines.

and from memory, may censorship ang internet access sa UAE diba? (like religious sites and entertainment sites)

I was in the UAE for 4 years (2006 to 2010). I lived and Dubai and Sharjah, pre- Dubai Metro. Honestly speaking I didn't like it much there - well except for the tax free salary. Feeling ko I always had to look over my shoulders - dunno why pero ganun eh.

I moved here in Sydney and I felt at home. Yes, I earn 2x I earn in Dubai but I take home less. Haha. Ang inisip ko noon, UAE is good but long term, it isn't. So, eto Sydney na ako.

    @Envy
When I was there wala censorship - if you know where to go. LOL. I downloaded a lot of pirated stuff when I was there. Sa Australia ako napadalan ng sulat through TPG - I downloaded a few CSI Las Vegas hahaha.

Btw, yung time line naten almost the same. Except 2010 ako sa Australia. I got my PR here too, March 2014.

    destiny tawag dyan :D

Bibili ka ng alak, itatago mo pa, bibili ka ng baboy dadayo ka pa, tapos yung R*m@dan period ok nman kasi less work and time pero parang nakaka alienate ng kultura.

kaya nung napadpad ako dito sa dako ng mundong ito, parang comfortable ako. tama ka, i felt that same way too , at home.

Yes! Dubai has a lot to offer, luxurious life, cars, high paying salary, but never felt at home for the last 5 years. Given that this place is a debt trap, banks are so generous in offering loans , once you lose your job, you'll most likely end up in jail.

So I am starting my journey to Aussie ;;), first choice was Canada but the cold weather is sooo depressing.

    @wizardofOZ

Don't get me wrong I am not living a luxurious life :D

I am not even speaking for pinoys alone. Alam naman natin na being pinoy here means you are earning less than the standard, unless you have something very special, good amount of experience, and have earned their total respect. And take note, standard salaries here are much much higher compared to most first world countries, that is why westerners come here to work their ass out even just for a short term and go back to their home country to pay their house mortgages.

What i'm saying is, people come here because of the luxurious life this country is offering, but this is only for those who can afford. I can't elaborate further as I haven't that much experience, but I know some pinoys here experienced luxurious kind of living even just for a moment, nothing wrong with that, it's their life.

And that is the whole point, as an expat, everything here is temporary.

luxurious and comfortable lifestyle is magkaiba nga...but most pinoy na medyo matagal na dito can have a taste of a luxurious lifestyle...like travelling to nearby countries kahit short period lang lalo na pag holidays...luxurious lifestyle like mag staycation sa mga hotels and enjoy the benefits of a tourist like buffet meals and bar hopping...luxurious lifestyle like buying expensive stuff...mostly ng "luxurious" na yan is fleeting. after nun kayod kalabaw ka ulit. comfortable namn is when you have your own unit na tinitirhan na walang kashare..but not in a high rise building..like sa mga villa lang....comfortable is you can have your own car pero hindi fully paid but on loan. Pinoys can experience both here in UAE, pero kung mala-celebrity na lifestyle wala pa akong nakitang pinoy who lived that way here. .. everything here is clearly something you want to experience ang downside lang is wala namn kasiguraduhan ang stay mo dito. no work no place to go but home.

I never worked in Dubai but me and my wife worked in Singapore. I worked in oil and gas and nasa construction management naman si misis. Big pay, savings and career...yes we had it...but why move to Australia. ito lang rason namin....you can never call dubai/singapore your home. You will never have the same right as the locals because you are a foreign worker. That country accepted you only for temporary basis.... Did i miss the savings, shopping, fine dine, expensive watches and bags, overseas trips???????? Nope. How can i if I dont have to share a flat, work life balance, freedom to speak my mind and an accepting community...End of the day for me, what matters most is the quality of life I live.

If you define comfortable living as waving an LV/Prada bag while in the mall only to go home on a shared room in an apartment then I think Dubai is the place for you...

A monthly rent for a 2BR apartment here in Dubai is AED6500 which is roughly AUD2200 which I think is comparable to the rental rates their in AU. If you have kids then a decent school here would cost you around AED 12-15K a year (AUD 5K) and that is just primary school which goes higher every year...

Dubai is not a cheap city to live in at all. Its just that some people here would compromise living conditions to appear as flashy or luxurious outside...

well said. Goodpoints! congrats on ur move to AU! I would also prefer to have a 'better' quality of living on top of all benefits that needs to be considered. Everythin else is temporary n life- shopping, salary, residency, citizenship- but u only live once, might as well live comftably :)

Na-recall ko, dati SG was the land of opportunity for most professional Filipinos, now parang lahat ng Pinoy na kakilala ko gusto nang umalis ng SG dahil sa mga alam na nating kadahilanan...

Sa tingin ko lang naman, ganyan din ang mangyayari sa mga kababayan natin sa Dubai, everything will get saturated to the point where alam na natin ang susunod na mangyayari...

We live for the now, but plan for the future ika nga.. do you like to see your children and grandchildren and subsequent generations of yours living in Dubai... what future do you see for them?

strongly agree.. i think most of us who decided to migrate is for long term purposes. kung san greener ang 'grass' dun tau why settle for something less. but again, iba iba tau ng definition ng 'greener pasture'. what i noticed is most of us in this forum, gusto ng better opportunity in a land na mas ok ang benefits both short and long term wise..yung iba na d discourage sa malaking tax, but i feel kahit san ka mag work wd or wdout tax, u shud only look at ur net income, ur savings habit and d investment opportunities you embrace a long d way pra nman indi forever nka depende lg sa isang source of income. it will always boil down on how much u save and invest and not how much u earn.

i just hope Au will continue to welcome migrants pra mas marami pa mabgyan ng better future na hindi makuha sa ibang place :)

Lived 9 years in Dubai, now living in Sydney. Single, and so probably seeing things differently. If take home pay is your top priority then in most cases Dubai far outranks Australia. Here I'm earning only 60% of what I was getting in Dubai, minus tax so that's easily less than half. But here I'm happier, I feel safer, I'm more relaxed, and life just feels better generally - I feel I get to live longer here (kasi $25 ang yosi madaling iwasan hahaha). In the end, it boils down to your values system as an individual, what you hold important in life. Don't get me wrong, although single/no kids I've been like a parent all this time trying to support a family back home, so it's not like I don't value $$$. But you just got to trust it's all going to be fine.

Mga "ex-Dubai" people kitakits naman jan ^_^

wow thank u for sharing! :D 9yrs narin kami sa Dubai at decided na kami indi mag isang dekada dito hehe. wla kami malaking expectations in terms of salary..like how we started here hindi nmn yan agad agad madali but since we want to raise our kid there and we are convinced na its a BETTER place to live then i think ur experience is a living example na kung ang mprtante is ung factor na ul feel more relaxed, valued and happier.. then no dubai salary can equate that :D comfort zone narin kc dito for ilang yrs..maiba nmn ..ibang challenge nmn , ibang opportunity to grow and live bsta may long term benefit :D

@jkk32w Ah nanjan pa pala kayo, yeah make the move already! :) I had my PR in 2009, I almost maxed out the 5-year window, finally moved to Sydney 3 days prior to my PR expiring hahaha! I didn't have any doubts, my mind was made up: Australia it is. I stayed back in Dubai for different reasons which are an entirely different story, kukuwento ko sayo pag dito ka na hehehe :) Let's keep in touch. Nakaka miss din ang Dubai, especially looking out to the lakes and Marina from my office on the 40th floor @ JLT. You're absolutely right about giving your family a future here. Colleague ko sa Dubai din and her husband naglipat dito last year, they have 2 kids and from what I hear from them it is far better here for them as a family. Let me know if I can be of any help at all, ok?

wow good for u.isang taon nlng citizen kana. moving this year na..mejo ma trabaho lng ang transition kc need tapusin ang contract sa bahay..then may mga gamit pa need i liquidate.
glad to know may m meetkami taga dubai before.. and yes looking forward for ur kwento :D sana marami pa tau ma meet dyan na ex dubai/uae. laki na ng improvement ng dubai now ang daming developments..pero we will always be expats here. our colleague who works in the same position as ours and holds a 'better' passport earns twice as we do..ayoko gnyan ma experience ng anak ko soon..and of course education is way way overpriced ..not worth the stay tlaga.. na miss mo pala ang view sa JLT.. well...for sure mas better ang view mo dyan on a diff angle :D

i will PM u f may questions ako sa transition hehe. Godbless sir! :D
