Just to point out... My post is fairly for new migrants. People who just got out of pinas:)

It is ok to buy the things you love. The things you have always wanted IF you can afford it or kahit on credit basta it is your own credit card AND because you have worked for it.
My gripe is for people who just got here with no jobs, utang pa yung baon or sold everything back home but is spending like crazy just to post a few measly pics on fb! Also people who buy things just because someone else bought something. They were all friends until when one buy somethings the other buys something similar but more expensive. The end story out of 5 friends.. 2 na lng sila nag-uusap ngayon.

It is ok to buy expensive things you have worked for and really want but not because your friend bought a 42 inch tv then you buy a 55 inch tv to replace a perfectly working 32 inch tv.

Yes by all means support your parents and even your siblings and nephews. But make sure also you keep some for yourself. Prioritized immediate families but know it is not your responsibility to send ALL relatives to school. True story din yan ng friend ko na nurse, she went home sa pinas after 3 years lahat ng kamag-anak was at her house asking for financial assistance. In less than a week, she shelled out 10k dollars!!!! She went back abroad almost broke!!!

It is ok to ask about marital status, income, residency, vital statistics/shoe size... Pero wait until you can say that person is your friend. I have been in several situation once in a bus stops i was speaking tagalog..this lady asked what i did, how much i earned if the guy i was with was my husband and asked if p.r. Kami ( he was my gay bff but doesn't look gay) then etc etc ... Then she turned to my friend and said, yung anak ko single yun. Maganda. ( beckons her daughter to come nearer). Buti na lang nag Go! Hahaha!!

I'm just trying to say.. The filipino culture is good and all pero when in rome do as the romans. Filter the bad but absorb the good. There are things that are quite personal to ask like how much one's weight...typical filipino greeting, oi tumataba ka yata?! ...hehehe.

But yeah, boundaries for people you have just met. Wait until the dust have settled before becoming to chummy...just because we are both filipinos doesn't make us best friends instantly.

relax guys... peace tayo lahat :)

@Metaform depende siguro who you talk to.. The brits/ozzies i work with parang taboo din sa kanila yan talking about salary. Also nasa contract namin not to disclose what pay level one is... Written talaga dun. Don't know why:)

Ako nman usually pag may nagtatanong ng sweldo kahit seryoso sya i dont find it offensive but rather very funny, usually, jokes lang din aabutin nya.

At eto pa malupet - meron pang expectation ng preferential treatment purely based on kasi kababayan mo. *facepalm* *jawdrop*

Hi - just wanted to share my view as a new migrant.

    1. Asking the salary..personally..para may idea on the salary for each role. I know data is on the net..but iba parin iyung knowing it directly from the person. Pero I agree..only when if I feel it is okay to ask the person and he will not feel offended.

    2. Benefits from the government - we are on a very tight budget as a new migrant and we explore all possible means on how we can extend the budget. If we know that we can get certain child support ( for example) from the government then it will help our budget. :)

I think this is a common mentality of pinoys. i know my parents have sent a few of their nephews and nieces to school because they feel its their obligation since sila ang merong maginhawang buhay. They probably feel guilty if they dont help since in their own word "thats what a true catholic would do".

Tomo, :D Yan ang ugaling pinoy! in some ways maganda, in some ways hindi. Maganda in the sense na nakakatulong sa pamilya. Kapag naabuso lang ay hindi na :( I know some people who obligate their family member/s na nasa abroad to remit money back home dahil kung hinde, kasalanan nya pag namatay sila sa gutom/sakit :-((

in the old forum long before i got my visa, me nagwarn na magingat sa kapwa pinoy kase sila yung mapang-uri. me bahay ka na ba, san ang work mo, anong car mo, magkano sweldo mo. sa Phil Consulate nga naginsinuate pa ang isang staff sa tanong niya sa akin kung Aussie ang husband ko. kala ata niya i got residency by marrying an Aussie. Sabi ko, single ako and i am here on skilled migrant visa. kainis diba, condescending eh. ayaw mo man magmalaki na skilled ka dumating dito, pero situation calls na sumagot ka para naman matauhan ang kausap mo. no offense meant for those who married an Aussie and got here, because love can truly exist between people of different races. in fact, i am happy that you found your match because i haven't but i'm happily single ;;)

Well, since we're talking Filipino Culture, I've never really understood the Pinoy culture of relatives being responsible for each other financially.

My parents have always taught us that when we grow up, we are only responsible for ourselves and the children we bring to the world (not that I have to worry, I'm gay).

So my parents, they have never asked me to be financially responsible for them when they grow old, the same way that I have never asked them for pamana when they die.

Sabi ng dad ko, "Ang anak, hindi investment or negosyo na may returns kapag nagkatrabaho na or nagkapera.".

I give gifts to my parents out of love, never out of obligation. And it feels so much better that way. Genuine yung gratitude because you know they don't expect it from you.

Anyway, just my two cents. :)

@mhej super agree. i live by this. it's not easy when you have expecting parents/relatives. you have to draw the line. you draw the line, don't expect them to draw it for you. i know not all of us have @mhej's parents, but this cycle can end with you - don't pass it on to your children.

pero ang kultura, eh kultura. mahirap mabago. @_@

Learn what you can sa mga nega na kwento nila pero don't let anyone bring you down.

Mas mainam pdn sariling sikap sa lahat ng bagay 🙂. all the best!

Yung tutulongan ka pero may ineexpect pa lang kapalit kaso di sasabihin sayo before the tulong, tapos ma shoshock ka na lang na galit sayo (kasi di mo na gets). hahaha...I've lived in SG for 7 yrs before coming here so nasanay ako na prangka mga tao, if it's charity it's charity, if it's business say so. If we don't agree, then let's move on, no hard feelings. :)

About naman sa ugaling naiingit, ingat2 na lang kasi di lang sa pinoy to, kahit yung mga taga dito ganyan din. Mahilig sila sa chismis. hahaha. Just observe at wag na wag mainvolve sa politics sa workplace kasi it can cost you your job, on the spot pwede kang tanggalin.
