    Things to do First

Below is a list of 7 important things that you should do as soon as possible after arriving in Australia.

    1. Apply for a Tax File Number (TFN)

Do this first. To receive an income in Australia, you need a Tax File Number (TFN).

    2. Register with Medicare

The Australian Government provides help with basic medical expenses through a scheme called Medicare.

    3. Open a bank account

In Australia, most income including salary or wages and government benefits are paid directly into a bank account.

    4. Register with Centrelink

Centrelink is a government agency which delivers a range of services to the community.

Check first your eligibility link: http://www.centrelink.gov.au/internet/internet.nsf/forms/claim_index.htm

    5. Register for English Classes

Communicating in English is very important and the key to your successful settlement.

    Eligibility:

You may be able to learn English with the AMEP if you hold a permanent visa, have little or no English, and:

are an adult (18 years or older)
are under 18 years of age and are not attending school. These clients may be eligible within their first 12 months of arrival to Australia)
Access to the AMEP is extended to some temporary visa holders as specified in the legislative instrument for 'English Courses for Holders of Certain Temporary Visas'.

You can study English with the AMEP for up to 510 hours or until you reach functional English, whichever comes first.

You should register for classes within six months of the date your visa commences and start classes within one year. You will have five years to complete classes. These timeframes may be extended in particular circumstances.

    6. Enrol Your Children in School

Under Australian law, children must attend school until they are 15 years old.

    7. Apply for a Driver's Licence

Information on gaining a driver's licence.

This is so great an information! Thanks a ton for posting :) Just a follow-up Q pls.. Is is true that one of the most expensive countries to live is Australia? Please focus on housing/room rentals and food..Thanks again!

bro meron yung walang monthly fee like my NAB Classic VISA card.

I just got home after inspecting 6 houses!

Reply to @sheep: Hi Sheep, Im on a 475 visa too,Western australia and would be leaving for australia this August for Mandurah or Bunbury.

Just like to ask, what did you do first when you arrive in Australia? Do we need to pass by Centrelink and medicare? Are we entitled to medicare or any other benefits so that we would know if still need to register with Centrelink or Medicare?

Can you please share your experience there, did you go through a job recruitment agency or kaw lng nag apply ? Do employers do really require local(australia) work experience? Its odd naman kc if they require it from new migrants but i heard they do but not sure if you have experience the same too?

    Thanks in advance. Raycel

    hi.

    Dear C,

Thank you for your enquiry. Unfortunately, the Skilled Migrant Mentoring Program no longer runs. We do however, offer several other employment courses, such as the Skillmax job seeker course, English for Employment and Pathways to Employment.

Skillmax is a job seeker course for migrants with an English level of IELTS 6.5+. The course usually runs over weeks, on 3 to 4 days, and covers everything from job seeking techniques, to writing a resume and cover letter, as well as networking etc. The City East Community College does try to connect most participants to a professional mentor, someone from the same professional background who can meet with the migrant and can explain to them more about their specific profession.

The English for Employment course is very similar, does run over 10 weeks though and has as a requirement that students have an IELTS of 5.5+.

The Employment Pathways course runs over 6 weeks and covers a 2 week work experience placement at the end.

All these courses are government funded and hence free of charge for eligible migrants.

Please note that, because the Skilled Migrant Mentoring Program no longer exists, we only check this email occasionally. You can better reach us under [email protected].

Our next Employment Pathways course starts 16th of July.
The next Skillmax course will probably commence 20th of August, and English for Employment on 15th of October.

If you wish t enrol in one of these courses, please send your current resume, overseas qualification, as well as a copy of your passport and visa to [email protected].

    Kind regards,

if PR visa, you will be entitled to have the Family Tax Benefit and Rental Allowance. 104 weeks or 2 years waiting time for the Newstart Allowance Benefit.
